Consciousness latent

At the very basis of SKEYS is the psychological construct called the schema, a non-conscious, latent structure for a person to organize his world and take action. The schema enables the person to interpret his or her experiences. External stimuli, situations, and life events activate latent schemas, triggering specific positive or negative behavioral patterns. It is these external stimuli which are to be studied through experimentation, but first understood through the schema. 

Rey and coworkers78 reported methyltin intoxication in six chemical workers exposed to Me2SnCl2 and MesSnCI. After a latent period of 1 -3 days, the first symptoms occurred, including headache, tinnitus, deafness, impair of memory, disorientation, aggressiveness, psychotic behavior, syncope, loss of consciousness and, in the most severe cases, respiratory depression requiring ventilatory assistance. Increased tin excretion was detected in the urine of all patients, particularly those most ill. The patient with the highest tin levels died 12 days after the initial exposure. 

Many have long latent histories, their significance unrecognized. They seeped into the collective subconscious until some event or individual insight clarified relationships long familiar at the subliminal level, but not consciously recognized until the right moment. 

The psi target and the psi channel (in the upper right-hand corner of Figure 5-2) feed into a function that is primarily latent in ordinary consciousness, the Psi Receptor, which is whatever process or processes that transform the psi information coming over the channel into a form useful for processing in the mind or the brain. Once this latent psi function is activated, four routes of information flow are are possible. ... 

It must be somewhat above this level that our consciousness works, weaving probability waves into patterns and incarnating them in the receptive structure of our brains. Our being or spirit lives in this Quantum Foam, which is thus the Eternal Now, infinite in extent and a plenum of all possibilities. The patterns of everything that has been, that is now, and will come to be, exists latent in this quantum foam. Perhaps this is the realm though which the mystics stepped into timelessness, the eternal present, and sensed the omnipotence and omniscience of the spirit. 

Because we are creatures with a certain kind of body and nervous system, a large number of human potentials are in principle available to use. but each of us is born into a particular culture that selects and develops a small number of these potentials, rejects others, and is ignorant of many. The small number of experiential potentials selected by our culture, plus some random factors, constitute the structural elements from which our ordinary state of consciousness is constructed, we are at once the beneficiaries and the victims of our culture s particular selection. The possibility of tapping and developing latent potentials, which lie outside the cultural norm, by entering an altered state of consciousness, by temporarily restructuring consciousness, is the basis of the great interest in such states. 

Figures 5-2 and 5-3 illustrate the qualitative pattern difference between two d-SoCs. various psychological structures are show connected information and energy flows into a pattern in different ways. The latent pattern, the discrete altered state of consciousness with respect to the other, is shown in lighter lines on each figure. The two states share some structures/functions in common, yet, their organization are distinctly different.

Also shown is the changing relationship of some of the latent potentials outside consciousness, changes we must postulate from this systems approach and our knowledge of the dynamic unconscious, but about which we have little empirical dataf31 at present. 

Eisner and Yensen have expressed more refined visions of the possibilities latent within the intersection of electronics and alternative states of consciousness. Eisner explains, "I view psychedelics and virtual... 

A noteworthy result was that after a latent period of about two hours the animals, although fully conscious, became extremely lethargic and unresponsive to stimuli for one to two hours before once again becoming normally active and timid. 

This book also discusses methodological problems in research from the point of view of the systems approach for example, the way in which experiential observations of consciousness and transitions from one d-SoC to another can be made and the shifts in research strategies that this approach calls for. The systems approach can also be applied within the ordinary d-SoC to deal with identity states, those rapid shifts in the central core of a person s identity and concerns that are overlooked for many reasons, and emotional states. Similarly the systems approach indicates that latent human potential can be developed and used in various d-ASCs, so that learning to shift into the d-ASC appropriate for dealing with a particular problem is part of psychological growth. At the opposite extreme, certain kinds of psychopathology, such as multiple personality, can be treat as d-ASCs. 

If the imaginal realm is real, then it is time to begin making it conscious. No longer the arcane pursuit of seers and mystics, the survival of our species may now depend on its capacity to live in the unus mundus. If this mutation is latent then conceivably it is contingent upon our choice to be- come its living catalyst. Such a choice is ultimately a no-lose proposition.
