So in order to allow for a different consciousness in business, we must allow room for and facilitate alternative ways of thinking within the individual. A world full of conscious businesses can only exist if we, as individuals, have the strength and coinage to maintain our individual self-consciousness. It is then that we can awaken to the possibility, and subsequent reality, of businesses being self-conscious and responsible entities answering to more than just their fiscal imperatives. 

Many organic entrepreneurs often shy away from influence and personal power because we have all witnessed too many cases over the years where the two have become so perverted with self-interest that it almost always appears one-sided and never shared we think we have to turn our backs on them if we are to buUd a conscious business. But we cannot be effective if our business is lacking in influence or personal power. To understand the source of influence, we must let go and accept that there is indeed the mysterious and the unknown. If your goal, then, as organic entrepreneurs is to build conscious businesses that serve more than just your own needs, wants, and desires, then you need to evolve to a point where you are more than just comfortable with failure, you need to revel in it as much as you revel in your successes. Failure takes us to the edge and that is a very uncomfortable place to be. If you are testing in small doses, you re probably also failing in small doses too, so plan for failure. 

No matter how many forecast reports or how much historical data you compile, a business cannot be successful if it cannot act in the present. Becoming fully "present" at meetings, on sales calls, while filing documents, or just answering the phone should be the concern and mandate of every conscious business. Presence is the heart of consciousness, the seat of manifestation and personal power. We can t become better entrepreneurs if we aren t more present, even in the xmpleasantness of running a business. 

If you are running a conscious business, to whom do you answer Who or what Your "boss" becomes that central place where inspiration and perspiration reside together. Your boss becomes your Greater Purpose. 

Each person s path toward a conscious business will be different from the next person s, mainly because of the makeup of our inner being and how we perceive and interact with our world with its losses, challenges, bounty, and energy. In essence, discovering the path toward conscious entrepreneurship is about discovering yourself and mastering the elements of your own personal environment. 

At some point during your personal transformation and after yovu intentional commitment to a conscious business, you re going to begin feeling a healthy compulsion to attract different clients, suppliers, and advocates to your environment. In this bio-electrical field that is your personal environment, you manifest a healthier, stronger, more adaptive business because it has suddenly become a more environmentally intelligent organism—a complex adaptive system. 

A product which possesses features that satisfy customer needs is a quality product. Likewise, one that possesses features which dissatisfy customers is not a quality product. So the final arbiter on quality is the customer. The customer is the only one who can decide whether the quality of the products and services you supply is satisfactory and you will be conscious of this either by direct feedback or by loss of sales, reduction in market share, and, ultimately, loss of business.

Since pollution prevention first entered the environmental lexicon in the 1980s, it has become a touchstone of U.S. environmental policy. To succeed, pollution prevention programs need sustained top management support and defined links to the company s core business activities. The process of change has started and I am sure it will continue. I feel that I have attained all the personal learning goals I set myself at the outset and most of the outcomes. I learnt a great deal from the process. It was extremely useful to assess my personal learning as I went along. All too often work is so busy and as soon as one task is completed you move swiftly on to the next. This process afforded me the opportunity to look more carefully at my approach and attitude to work and to make conscious decisions to change that approach.

The key to success is location and product mix so it will pay to do your homework before you start your business. 

With any two partners, there are always problems and issues to deal with. There are differences in goals and values (see Box 5.8). Those of us in industry deal with the marketplace we focus on return on investment. We are very cost conscious. We go out of business if we are not cost competitive. We are for-profit we have to provide a return to our shareholders, and we always have to keep the results of innovation as a competitive advantage. That is how we make money. And, of course, timing is everything.
