Critical consciousness

The symptoms produced by respiratory alkalosis result from increased irritability of the central and peripheral nervous systems. These include light-headedness, altered consciousness, distal extremity paresthesias, circumoral paresthesia, cramps, carpopedal spasms, and syncope. Various supraventricular and ventricular cardiac arrhythmias may occur in extreme cases, particularly in critically ill patients. An additional finding in many patients with severe respiratory alkalosis is hypophosphatemia, reflecting a shift of phosphate from the extracellular space into the cells. Chronic respiratory alkalosis is generally asymptomatic. [Pg.428]

The concept of chemical neurotransmission originated in the 1920s with the classic experiments of Otto Loewi (which were themselves inspired by a dream), who demonstrated that by transferring the ventricular fluid of a stimulated frog heart onto an unstimulated frog heart he could reproduce the effects of a (parasympathetic) nerve stimulus on the unstimulated heart (Loewi Navratil, 1926). Subsequently, it was found that acetylcholine was the neurotransmitter released from these parasympathetic nerve fibers. As well as playing a critical role in synaptic transmission in the autonomic nervous system and at vertebrate neuromuscular junctions (Dale, 1935), acetylcholine plays a central role in the control of wakefulness and REM sleep. Some have even gone as far as to call acetylcholine a neurotransmitter correlate of consciousness (Perry et al., 1999). [Pg.26]

Upon entering, you find yourself in an empty semi-circular chamber, which is the vestibule to the place of power itself. Do not be deceived by its emptiness it is only the spacious quality of Akasha. The guardian of this chamber—when she or he comes—will be of critical importance in advanced aspects of the Work. Set in the eastern wall is a life-sized representation of tarot Key 1, The Magician. It is fashioned, like the others in the central column, of stained glass, and is lit from behind. The only way to enter the Nuptial Chamber proper is to become the Magician to take on the mode of consciousness this tarot key represents. [Pg.98]

By slowly increasing the complexity of the models in this fashion, it was hoped that a model could be obtained that was just sufficiently complex to allow an adequate fit of the data. This conscious attempt to select a model that satisfies the criteria of adequate data representation and of minimum number of parameters has been called the principle of parsimonious parameterization. It can be seen from the table that the residual mean squares progressively decrease until entry 4. Then, in spite of the increased model complexity and increased number of parameters, a better fit of the data is not obtained. If the reaction order for the naphthalene decomposition is estimated, as in entry 5, the estimate is not incompatible with the unity order of entry 4. If an additional step is added as in entry 6, no improvement of fit is obtained. Furthermore, the estimated parameter for that step is negative and poorly defined. Entry 7 shows yet another model that is compatible with the data. If further discrimination between these two remaining rival models is desired, additional experiments must be conducted, for example, by using the model discrimination designs discussed later. The critical experiments necessary for this discrimination are by no means obvious (see Section VII). [Pg.121]

Research like this been has criticized for poor sampling, obsolete data, conflation of attitudes with behavior, and conflicting results. It has also been subject to the complaint that environmental consciousness has become so... [Pg.5]

In my case, I had more than just the "t" to fix. I had to de-pro-gram my stubbornness, over-sensitivity to criticism, self-consciousness, and boost my self-esteem. Dr. Walker was probably pra dng that my "sarcasm" would find it s way to the exit, as well. Luckily, at the age of just fourteen, I listened. I thought about the simple risk vs. reward system for making a decision. [Pg.29]

Multiple premises exist for the large layer 5 pyramidal cells being critical to consciousness. Crick and Koch (1992) have hypothesized that the large layer 5 pyramidal cells are correlated most closely with consciousness because they fire in bursts and send information completely out of the cortex. HamerofF and Penrose (1996) have suggested the cortical microtubule, tuned by the MAP-2 protein, as the site of conscious computation in the brain. This implicates the large layer 5 pyramidal cells because they are enriched with MAP-2 protein (Woolf, 1993). [Pg.33]

Reflection on this process can reveal how you perceive your strengths and limitations. You will probably be aware of many of the factors that lead you to shape your venture the way you do some you will be less aware of. Critical selfreflection on your choices at a later stage may be necessary to bring these less conscious influences to light. [Pg.90]

The nature of your intentions towards making yourself more aware can be critical. With a positive Intent you will be active in picking up clues, searching out what you need to find. With an indifferent or half-hearted Intent you risk inadequately briefing yourself about possibilities and pitfalls. A negative approach, or searching without an open mind, and you risk blinding yourself to essential information, which you may deny or block off from your consciousness. [Pg.98]

This formula is used at the critical time of Yang collapse. Patients can gradually lose consciousness, have cold sweats, extremely cold limbs and a very deep and weak pulse. In this formula, two strong herbs are chosen. [Pg.187]

The first of these two criticisms needs no reinforcement, because the interventions that it describes are common and well known, but the second might seem a little weak. How, it might be asked, could the belief that q have failed to stop the formation of the belief that p in a person who held it consciously But there is an answer to this he may not have put it together with his premises. It is even possible to believe not-p consciously and to believe p consciously, provided that they are held apart. What is impossible is to put the two together and to believe their conjunction consciously. [Pg.70]

If this is accepted, the two criticisms add up to a formidable objection to the theory that the line dividing S from is the line dividing what is not conscious from what is conscious. It is no good protesting that the objection is captious because it hammers a theory for breaking down in a few exceptional cases. That is not the situation here. For however much truth there may be in this theory, its breakdowns are very common. It follows that, whatever the importance of consciousness, there must be another factor at work and it is possible that the line dividing S from ought to be based on that other factor. [Pg.70]
