Consciousness conscious economics

Not all decisions are made on the basis of economics alone. Consumers choose capital investments on the basis of efficiency, aesthetics and perceived benefits. An important environmental benefit of hybrid cars is the reduction in emissions. This is of particular relevance to an environmentally conscious consumer, and may shift the choice even though the benefit to the consumer is difficult to measure m dollars. 

However unfortunate, drilling personnel have been historically directly connected with major incidents within the petroleum industry on numerous occasions and the impression, consciously or unconsciously still remains. On the other hand, it is very rare or non-existent that a loss prevention professional is promoted to the ranks of senior management, even though they may have been keenly conscientious in maintaining a high economic return to the company by the prevention of catastrophic accidents. 

One of my professors—who turned out to be a true favorite— wouldn t call on me for the first several weeks of our seminar. I think he was put off by having someone spastic and or paralyzed in his graduate economics seminar. It was hard for him to come to grips with issues such as whether or not I was thinking inside that body. I was paralyzed and drooling and couldn t look him in the eye. I couldn t articulate ideas except at home, in writing, and his prejudice and my self-consciousness got in our way. I worked real hard in that class, and he wound up being a supportive friend. Due to many impressive advances in metal-catalyzed transformations, both asymmetric and non-asymmetric, several efforts have been directed towards designing total synthesis routes that very heavily depend on various catalytic methods. These total syntheses benefit from the economic efficiency and environmental consciousness that are two of the inherent attributes of catalytic reactions. The total synthesis of wodeshiol 133 by Corey, discussed above (Scheme 19) is one such example. Two additional catalysis-based enantioselective total syntheses are briefly discussed below. In both efforts, all centers of asymmetiy are attained by a catalytic enantioselective method, and the synthesis is completed through the use of several other catalytic reactions. 

Mathematics allows us to expand our consciousness. Mathematics tells us about economic trends, patterns of disease, and the growth of populations. Math is good at exposing the truth, but it can also perpetuate misunderstandings and untruths. Figures have the power to mislead people. 

Research-based pharmaceutical firms worldwide have become highly conscious of all factors that can affect time to market of their new products. Every day on the critical path toward regulatory approval is important, economically and competitively. Early development of a robust process, both for drug substance and for drag product, significantly enhances time to market of a new product [9,12,14,15],... 

The previous sections have pointed to the important role that solar energy will play in a sustainable society. Whether we talk of a living system, an industrial society, or an economic system, it seems that ultimately solar energy should drive it "The sun is our nuclear reactor, remote and safe" [3]. In that context, it makes much sense to pay attention to an inspiring and consciousness-raising monograph with the title Our Ecological Footprint [20,28]. 

By the mid-1980s, the general situation was clear enough. The continuation of our present industrial civilization with its reliance on fossil fuels, extensive use of pesticides and fertilizers, and the resulting contaminants will lead eventually to collapse from exhaustion of resources (Meadows, 1972) (Fig. 15.2), and from the health and economic consequences of environmental pollution. There is controversy about the time at which a breakdown would be apparent, but it is clear to those who are conscious ofthe huge inertia in the industrial processes that are causing the trouble... 

At no time in modern history has the general public been more conscious of health and environmental issues. Therefore, it is somewhat understandable that we have witnessed, in just a very few years, the enactment of more federal legislation in occupational and environmental health than has been legislated in the history of this country, or any other nation. However, this has been achieved during a period of general national unrest induced by many social, economic and political factors. 

Thus while it is understandable that authorities must be careful to soothe the fears of a public that is insufficiently informed of the dangers that threaten it, it must also be aware of the economic and social costs of refusing to accept the risks inherent in any human activity, and also conscious of the uncertainties surrounding the rules and regulations taken to satisfy its demands.
