SEALANT

Synthetic polymers suitable as binders for the production of caulks and sealants include silicones, polyurethanes, polysulfides, and aqueous polymer emulsions. The importance of these sealants in the construction industry has also increased considerably through the increased use of prefabricated elements. The movement of components must be absorbed and compensated by the joint sealant. These movements can be expansion, contraction, or shear. [Pg.234]

While silicones, polyurethanes and polysulfides set through a chemical reaction, water based emulsion sealants achieve their functional end state by simple physical drying, i.e. evaporation of the water. The majority of emulsion sealants are composed of acrylic emulsions and to a lesser extent vinylacrylic and other copolymers. [Pg.234]

Polymer emulsion sealants can be used on all sorptive substrates, such as concrete, aerated concrete, cement panels, plaster and wood. They are used for sealing aU types of internal joints, connecting joints (internal and external) and expansion joints (internal and external) with a movement capability of 10-15 %. In Europe, the joint design is stipulated in the relevant standards, for example DIN 18540. [Pg.234]

The total cauUc and sealant market in North America is estimated 500 000 tons of formulated sealants [80], with acrylic emulsion sealants comprising approximately 15 % of the total market, and 23 000 tons dry acrylic resin. Water based sealants, sold primarily in cartridge tubes, are used predominately in construction applications whereas reactive urethanes and silicones are used in more demanding construction and automotive applications. [Pg.234]

The properties of an emulsion caulk or sealant are affected by the type of emulsion, and by the type and amount of the fillers and/or pigments, plasticizers and thickeners [81]. [Pg.234]

A sealant is a material that is installed into a gap or joint to prevent water, wind, dirt, or other contaminants from passing through the joint or gap. This joint or gap may be a fixed joint, but is often an expansion joint which may also be called a working joint. Sealants, which can also be defined by how they are tested, are rated by their ability to stretch, twist, bend, and be compressed while maintaining their bulk properties so that they do not tear apart under stress. A most important rating of a sealant in many applications is the movement ability of the sealant. The adhesion required of a sealant is simply the strength to hold the sealant in position as it is stressed and strained. [Pg.308]

Adhesives are used to transfer loads and are typically designed with much higher tensile and shear strengths than sealants. The most important rating of an adhesive in many applications is the determination of how much load it can handle. Some sealants are used as adhesives and some adhesives as sealants and thus arises the occasional blurring of their roles. If the material s primary function is the exclusion of wind, water, dirt, etc, it is a [Pg.308]

It should be underlined in conclusion that the choice of the means of modifying glue compositions with Cl is in the process of evolution. Towards this aim, additives such as guanidine chromate, some chromic acid esters and chromates, etc. that adsorb onto the glued surface and maintain the strength of the seam are used. They raise the resistance of the glued metal joint to the effects of seawater. [Pg.339]

Over a dozen characteristic features of sealants, numerous formulations and diversity of application fields serve the base for their subdivision into groups. The simplest classification of sealants, by their deformation properties, divides them into plastic and solid ones. The former operate in a viscous-flow state or close to it and may deform irreversibly under low enough loads. The latter are able to preserve the properties of a solid body within a considerable loading range. [Pg.339]

Plastic sealants appeared on the world market in the 1940s and, despite stiff competition from elastic sealants made on the base of vulcanizable rubbers, they are still extensively applicable today. [Pg.339]

Typical representatives of this group are non-drying sealants based on butyl rubber, polyisobutylene, ethylene-propylene rubber in combination [Pg.339]

Solid sealants is a code name of the totality of initially liquid or pastelike sealants that transform into a solid state (spontaneously or as a result of certain effects) when impregnated into the clearance of the joint to be sealed. This term is conditional because, even after solidification, these sealants occupy an intermediate position between a liquid and solid according to their deformation characteristics. [Pg.340]

Although the design aspects provide most of the corrosion protection for airplanes, corrosion inhibitors are widely used to provide additional protection when used periodically in service. Corrosion inhibitors are applied in areas such as the lobe of the fuselage and most of the aluminum parts. The corrosion inhibitors are petroleum-based compounds that either displace the water or serve as a coating. The water-displacing inhibitors are sprayed onto a structure to penetrate faying surfaces and keep water away from crevices. The application of these inhibitors must be repeated at intervals of every few years. The more viscous heavy-duty inhibitors are also sprayed, which form a much thicker film and have a lesser penetrating ability. These thicker inhibitors are applied on airplane parts that are most prone to corrosion. [Pg.288]

The proper corrosion maintenance program should prevent or eliminate the conditions favoring corrosion (i) trapped moisture (ii) wet insulation blankets (iii) plugged drain holes and passages (iv) chipped or missing paint (v) loss of protective finish (vi) corrosive cargo. [Pg.288]

The process lends itself to lamination on a large scale. Many cells can be processed at one time within a single vacuum bag by careful arrangement and spacing to minimize wasted bagging material. After lamination, the laminated sheet can be cut into individual devices. [Pg.193]

In smaller scale research applications, a polymer-coated foil bag (polybag) can be vacuumed and the edges heat-sealed by hand [47]. An ideal sealant bag is thermally conductive, electronically insulating, moisture resistant, and has a one-way gas permeability membrane to vent gases generated from the system. [Pg.193]

Cleavage is similar to peel and occurs when forces at one end of a rigid bonded assembly act to split the adherend. The stress in this case is not evenly distributed, but concentrated on one side of the joint, [Pg.547]

The ability of the adhesive to support the design loads under service conditions for the expected life of the structure is the first thing to be considered in adhesive selection. Thus, the mechanical properties, durability, and environmental resistance of the bonded stmcture are also important. [Pg.547]

Sealants are available in anon-cured, pourable, or extrudable state for easy application. Upon curing, they are transformed into solid elastomeric material. According to Feldman, ] the characteristics that define a sealant are that they  [Pg.547]

The general composition of a sealant consists of a base polymer and additives. However, there is an inclination to classify sealants in terms of their chemical composition or physical properties. Based on this, the main sealant groups are Pi [Pg.548]
