Table 5.1 outlines useful properties, products and application areas of acrylic systems. Key market segments are coatings based on methacrylates as well as emulsions and water-based sealants. Acrylic emulsions and redispersible powders as cement modifiers offer many useful products for several end-uses. However, the high cost of acrylic has limited their use as cement modifiers. The use of water-based acrylic systems is increasing because of their non-toxic and environmentally friendly nature. [Pg.101]

The term Filler indicates something used to fill gaps mainly fillers are particles added to material (plastics, composite material and concrete) to improve some properties of the mixture material. Worldwide more than 53 million tons of fillers are used every year in different application areas, such as paper, plastics, rubber, paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants. As such, fillers, produced by huge nmnber of companies, rank among the world s major raw materials and are a major constituent in a variety of goods for daily consmner needs. [Pg.154]

Sulfolane is used as a polymerization solvent for the production of polysulfones, polysiloxanes, polyphenylene ethers, and other polymers. Sulfolane is said to increase the reaction rates, afford easier polymer purification, and improved thermal stability. Sulfolane is a solvent for dissolving a variety of polymers for use in the fiber-spinning process. Cellulose and cellulose ester polymers can be plasticized with sulfolane to give improved flexibility and other physical property improvements [12,13]. Other application areas that have used sulfolane include electronic and electrical, textile-dye uses, curing of polysulfide sealant, and as a catalyst in certain synthetic reactions. [Pg.287]

Two major application areas in whch anaerobic sealants have had a profound impact are porous metal impregnation and liquid gasketing. Although the physical properties of the products directed at these areas are extremely dissimilar in the uncured state, the cured materials share common features which render them uniquely suitable as sealants. Vinyl acetate [108-05-4], (VAc), CH2=CHOOCCH, the ethenyl ester of acetic acid, is primarily use for the manufacture of poly (vinyl acetate) [9003-20-7] (PVAc) and vinyl acetate copolymers. Poly(vinyl acetate) homo- and copolymers are found as components in coatings, paints and sealants, binders (adhesives, nonwovens, construction products, and carpet-backing), and miscellaneous uses such as chewing gum and tablet coatings. Coal tar pitch is the most widely used resinous extender for epoxy resins. It is primarily used in surface coating formulations, but can also be used as a cost reducer and flexibi-lizer in epoxy adhesives and sealants. This is an important and growing application for chemical-resistant and oil-resistant polysulphide sealants. As a result of a survey commissioned in Germany by the Association for Mineral Oil, Natural Gas and Coal (Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft fiir Erdbl, Erdgas und Kohle, 1989, 1991) it was found that less volatile diesel fuels permeate into the ground and contaminate the water-table. It was roughly estimated that one litre of diesel can spoil a million litres of water. The problem is more serious in areas where the water-table is near to the surface. [Pg.173]
