In the constmction industry, ceUular polymers are used as spacers and sealant strips in windows, doors, and closures of other types, as weU as for backup strips for other sealants. 

The cylindrical-type sealing process for strip packaging does not usually have a cooling cycle or quench surface, hence any pull on the seal ply will tend to weaken the seal while the sealant is still pliable. Therefore, it is desirable that the sealant have good hot tack or a high melt viscosity at processing temperatures. Hot tack is generally accepted to mean the adhesion quality of the sealant from the moment it leaves the seal head and the time it returns to its set or permanent condition. 

I had already bolted the alternator s control panel to the hydro unit, added terminals to its wires, and connected them to the appropriate terminals on the alternator. The only remaining job was to route the twisted wires (from the remote shunt) to the control panel and screw them down to the terminal strip inside. I added silicone sealant to seal the hole where the wires... 

Many types of elastomers were screened to determine their relative abilities to resist bending loads at 76°K. This screening consisted of bending a nominal -in.-thick coating of the sealant, on a strip of 0.032-in.-thick aluminum, around a 4-in.-diameter mandrel at 76°K. The aluminum surface was cleaned by etching in a chromic acid solution, and the sealants were applied and cured. In some instances, a primer was used to promote adhesion. 

The fixture consisted of a hollow aluminum block with a removable plate forming one wall. An aluminum strip was bonded to this wall with the sealant, and liquid nitrogen was poured into the hollow chamber to cool the entire fixture and strip. The sealant thickness was arbitrarily kept at a nominal re in. A thermocouple embedded in the sealant measured the temperature and monitored the flow of liquid nitrogen. The strips used in the tests conducted during this program were 0.032 x 1 x 6 in. aluminum with a J in. 

Extrusion of the sealant may be caused by overfill sealing groove and lack of compressibility of the backer material (caulking strip), if used. 

The epoxy specimens were cured in disposable fluorescence/transmission cells (Fig. 2) made from two microscope-slide glass plates cut to fit the width and height dimensions of the standard cell holder (12 x 45 mm) with a light path of 1.5 mm determined by the thickness of a silicone rubber spacer/sealant strip. 

Sealant, backing strip, bond breaker and primer shall be suitable for the type, size, expected movement and location of the joint to be sealed and for fire rating. 

Compressible sealant strips can be used, provided the flanges are sufficiently rigid not to bow between bolting points. 

The automotive industry usually eites technieal shortcomings rather than health eonsiderations for attempting to reduce its dependence on PVC in vehiele eomponents. Flexible PVC has been used in the past in underseal, instrument panels, wiring insulation, weatherstrip, window sealants, body side protection strips, door panels, seats, armrests and sun visors. Many of these applications require a soft, flexible material that used to be diffieult to produce without PVC, but can now be made using a modified polyolefin formulation.

Finally, conventional sealants, based on silicone rubber formulations, are used to bond in silicone rubber sealant strips. 

CLEAN THE SURFACE. Remove any old weather stripping or sealant, thoroughly wash the surface that forms the window s seal with soap and water, and let it dry.

Peel off the white backing of the strip, and then place a bead of silicone sealant (on the sticky side of the magnetic strip) around the perimeter of the magnet and at the rim of the cut hole (see Figure 11.3B). This is to keep saline from leaking out.
