Polysulphide sealants were used in building structures for a long time before a standard specification was developed for such uses. ASA-A116.1 was the first specification for building sealants written by the Building Trade Specification Committee in 1956. Later, several specifications were designated by different societies for one-component and two-component systems. The specifications will be mentioned in the following. Apart from polysul-phides these specifications also refer to urethane and silicone sealants... [Pg.166]

The properties of high performance building sealants have been studied as a function of four variables stress, strain, time and temperature, using tensile tests. By time-temperature superposition the number of variables can be reduced to three and the material properties characterized in a three-dimensional coordinate system. For sealants the projection of the failure points to this system in the log strain versus log time plane is sufficient for characterization. Further simplification can be made depending on the properties of the various types of sealant. [Pg.177]

Most of the polysulfide sales are in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Polysulfide sealants have 83% of the market share of insulating glass sealants in Europe, 35% in the United States, and a total of 60% worldwide. Polysulfides have only a modest share of the building sealant market. Polysulfides are virtually the only sealant specified for aircraft integral fuel tanks worldwide. In addition, they comprise about 90% of other aircraft sealant applications. The total volume used in the aircraft sealant market fluctuates with aircraft construction and repair. [Pg.6630]
