Sealants applications

Another common device used in the rubber industry is the thin film evaporator. This device is very often used in the manufacture of ultra-low molecular weight elastomers that are used in sealant applications or specialty coatings, and as processing aids in conventional rubber compounding processes. The thin film evaporator described earlier, has found a multitude of other industry applications, including food processing operations. [Pg.143]

Since then, uses have shifted more toward civilian applications. Polysulfides have unusually good resistance to solvents and to the environment and good low temperature properties. This makes them particularly useful in a variety of sealant applications. For example, the outstanding resistance of polysulfides to petroleum (qv) products has made them the standard sealant for virtually all aircraft integral fuel tanks and bodies. Another important application is in insulating glass window sealants (qv). Certain specifications and standards provide excellent tutorials on adhesives and sealants. For example, MIL-HDBK-691 offers a complete handbook on adhesive bonding, and MIL-HDBK-725 provides a guide to the properties and uses of adhesives. ASTM C 962 provides an excellent source of information regarding sealant joint design and the types of sealants that are appropriate for various substrates. To illustrate the effect of sample thickness, we can compare adhesives to sealants, which in many cases can be viewed as thick adhesives. As the sample thickness is increased, the benefit of the BTZ is clearly demonstrated. In Table 3 a SEBS/hydrogenated hydrocarbon tackifier sealant formulation was prepared as a hot melt and poured into shallow petri dishes. Although both of these polymers have good inherent stability, sealant applications may require extended exposure to UV radiation. The discoloration data show that the BTZ prevents yellowing of the sealant. However, examination of the sealant surface shows surface crazing and cracking when not protected by incorporation of the HALS. Sealant applications are major commercial products, which fall into two categories PVC plastisols whieh do not have reactive components and PVC plastisols combined with blocked isoeyanates or isocyanurates. The first category of sealants is the most popular as an underbody sealant, whereas the seeond category includes construction and general purpose sealants. PVC gels are used occasionally as electrolytes, vibration reducing materials, and the like. [Pg.206]

The back profile of the sealant and its correct depth are conttolled by the back-up material, which is placed in the joint before sealant application. A number of readily compressible materials, such as closed-cell foamed polyethylene, are used for this purpose. It is essential that the sealant does not adhere to the back of the joint and is free to extend with joint movement. Where appropriate, therefore, a bond breaker consisting of a thin film of plastic material is inserted between the back-up material and the sealant. [Pg.447]
