General composition

Soil is a multi-phase system consisting of solids, liquids, and gases. In a typical soil, solids, liquids, and gases occupy 50,15-35, and 15-35% of the total volume respectively (Jackson, 1964). As an example, a soil sampled in a New Jersey field during the autumn showed 55% of its volume occupied by solids and the remaining 45% by pores. Of the 45% pore volume, 12% was occupied by airspace and 33% by water (Ugolini, unpublished). [Pg.126]

About 40% of the solid phase is inorganic and about 10% is organic, either dead or alive. The inorganic constituents of the soil are dominated by four elements O, Si, Al and Fe (Jackson, 1964). [Pg.126]

Together with Mg, Ca, Na, and K, they constitute 99% of the soil mineral matter. This elemental composition and distribution does not differ much from [Pg.127]

Of approximately 80 elements found in soils, 17 are used by plants to grow. These are called the essential elements and include H, C, O, N, P, S, K, Mg, Ca, B, Cl, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Co. Hydrogen and O are derived from the hydrosphere, C from the atmosphere, N from the biosphere, and the remaining 13 from the lithosphere or the mineral soil. Can the species activity coefficients be calculated accurately An activity coefficient relates each dissolved species concentration to its activity. Most commonly, a modeler uses an extended form of the Debye-Hiickel equation to estimate values for the coefficients. Helgeson (1969) correlated the activity coefficients to this equation for dominantly NaCl solutions having concentrations up to 3 molal. The resulting equations are probably reliable for electrolyte solutions of general composition (i.e., those dominated by salts other than NaCl) where ionic strength is less than about 1 molal (Wolery, 1983 see Chapter 8). Calculated activity coefficients are less reliable in more concentrated solutions. As an alternative to the Debye-Hiickel method, the modeler can use virial equations (the Pitzer equations ) designed to predict activity coefficients for electrolyte brines.
