The Hquid polymer is then compounded with metal oxides or peroxides, as weU as fillers (carbon black) and can undergo cold vulcanization, ie, chain extension and cross-linking iato a soHd matrix. It is largely used as a sealant and gasket material for wiadows, automobile wiadshields, etc. [Pg.471]

Microcrystalline wax is found worldwide as a constituent of crude oil. It is removed by solvent extraction and distillation. The colour varies, depending on grade, from white to brown black. It has many uses, including waterproofing paper and textiles, and as a sealant. This wax consists of a mixture of long chain (C41 C57) unsaturated hydrocarbons with an average molecular weight of 500 800. [Pg.12]

A sealant, such as Apiezon W, is a good example of a material that was designed for an extremely limited application. Apiezon W is a hard black wax that needs to be heated to 80°-90°C before it is soft enough to apply to the members you wish to join. At room temperatures it is hard and has no lubrication abilities whatsoever and is therefore not usable for a stopcock. It has a relatively high vapor pressure (10 3 torr), so it cannot be used for most vacuum work. However, at temperatures of about 100° to 150°C, it becomes very thin like hot honey and can easily be applied to joint members. Therefore, if you have a standard taper joint that will not be in a high-heat or ultrahigh-vacuum environment, there is no need to separate often, and you don t want it to accidentally separate, Apiezon W is the type of sealant you need. [Pg.197]

A black-and-white felt rub-down test is performed to demonstrate adequate cleanliness of the interior clean-envelope surfaces. This test consists of both black-and-white felt being wiped over any surface for 1 m linear distance with a firm hand pressure. No residue should be visible on the cloth. Each cloth should be 60cm square black or white static-free natural hber felt folded with cut edges inside to a 25-cm square. The cut edges should be sealed with an approved latex sealant. [Pg.226]

The heat and ozone resistant [126] EPR was made by incorporating acrylic rubber, dicumyl peroxide, triaUyl cyanurate, ZnO and carbon-black into the matrix. Triallyl cyanurate increases the crosslinking efficiency probably due to an addition reaction between polymeric and aUyl radicals and leads to stable chemical crosslinks. Thus ozone because there is no unsaturation cannot initiate a degradation reaction. Digteva et al. [127] prepared sealants for use at high temperature by adding aromatic diaminodisulfide, MgO, ZnO and carbon black in EPR. The aromatic diaminodisulfide is an antiozonant and functions both as an antioxidant and a... [Pg.193]

The hydroxyl-terminated homo- and copolymers of butadiene have been utilized in the preparation or modification of urethane elastomers and sealants (102). Owing to the presence of unsaturation in these polymers, reinforcement with certain fillers such as carbon black can be achieved. Hydroxyl-terminated polyisobutylenes have also been used for the preparation of NCO-terminated prepolymers (103). Very recently (104). a,u-di-(hydroxy)polyisobutylenes have been prepared by a different route. Polyurethane films prepared from these polyisobutylene glycols have exhibited excellent hydrolytic stability and very low water absorption (105). However, these materials are not yet commercially available. [Pg.1002]

Non-reinforcing extending fillers are used in many silicone RTV sealant formulations. These include calcium carbonate, carbon blacks, talcs and other inorganic fillers. [Pg.119]

Fillers increase the strength, impart needed rheological properties, and reduce the cost of sealants. Tensile properties are increased significantly, depending on the type of filler, its particle size, and the type of cure. Improper filler selection can ruin the performance of a polysulfide sealant. Calcium carbonates (wet or dry ground limestone, precipitated), carbon blacks (furnace, thermal), calcined clays, silica and silicate fillers, and rutile titanium dioxide are typical fillers used in polysulfide sealants. Generally, combinations of fillers are used in formulation. Plasticizers improve the working properties while... [Pg.532]

A typical polyurethane sealant formulation may contain a urethane prepolymei an isocyanate, plasticizer, fillers (including carbon black), and several other components. An important criterion is the concentration of residual isocyanate functionality available for further reaction. This may be established by reaction with... [Pg.46]

Black rubber can sensitize hydraulic engineers. Assembly workers build the frame and both rivet and seal. Set-up men, riveters, retouching specialists, and engine fitter-mechanics may come into contact with sealants that may contain phenol-formaldehyde resin (Beck 1989), epoxy base (Handley and Burrows 1994), hexavalent chromate in hardeners for epoxy-based sealants (Handley and Burrows 1994) and polysulfides in two-part sealant bases (Wilkinson and Beck 1993 Bruze et al. 1996). Thiocol, a synthetic rubber based on polysulfide polymers, is used by aircraft fitters to dip screws and rivets into before use, and a fingertip dermatitis localized to the thumb and first two fingers of the dominant hand was seen in five of six fitters with positive patch-test reactions to the polysulfide-polymer-containing system (Wilkinson and Beck 1993). [Pg.806]
