Process and Equipment Integrity—Among the things to be considered here are reliability engineering, materials of construction, fabrication and inspection procedures, installation procedures, preventive main-tainence, process, hardware and systems inspections and testing (prestartup safety review), maintainence procedures, alarm and instrument management, and demolition procedures. 

The fuel cell types addressed in this handbook have significantly different operating regimes. As a result, their materials of construction, fabrication techniques, and system requirements differ. Design, materials of construction, fabrication methods, inspection requirements, shipment and installation, operating conditions, and inservice surveillance are all components of a program to assure reactor vessel integrity for the plant design lifetime. Materials of Construction. Tanks are constmcted from a number of materials based on cost and availabiHty of the material, ease of fabrication, resistance to corrosion, and compatibiHty with stored fluid. Sometimes specialized composites and techniques are used in tank constmction. These are the exception. 

Filter-medium selection embraces many types of construction fabrics of woven fibers, felts, and nonwoven fibers, porous or sintered solids, polymer membranes, or particulate solids in the form of a permeable bed. Media of all types are available in a wide choice of materials. 

Beyond the simple resistance of a material of construction to dissolution in a given chemical, many other properties enter into consideration when makiug an appropriate or optimum MOC selection for a given environmental exposure. These factors include the influence of velocity, impurities or contaminants, pH, stress, crevices, bimetallic couples, levels of nuclear, UV, or IB radiation, microorganisms, temperature heat flux, stray currents, properties associatea with original production of the material and its subsequent fabrication as an item of equipment, as well as other physical ana mechanical properties of the MOC, the Proverbial Siebert Changes in the Phase of the Moon, and so forth. 

It is also common practice to classify filter media by their materials of construction. Examples are cotton, wool, linen, glass fiber, porosmooth surface caused by carrying the warp (or the weft) on the fabric surface over many weft (or warp) yarns. Intersections between warp and weft are kept to a minimum, just sufficient to hold the fabric firmly together and still provide a smooth fabric surface. The percentage of open area in a textile filter indicates the proportion of total fabric area that is open, and can be determined by the following relationship ... 

Fabrication of baghouses can be of modular design, factory-welded subassemblies, or structural design. The selection of the type of fabrication depends on size of unit, transportation requirements, site location, physical location of unit at plant (e.g., on roof), and materials of construction. 

The woven fabrics have various yarn patterns for different spacings between the yarn fabrics (Table 4-14). There is a wide variety of choices for not only the materials of construction but the tightness of weave and the size of the yarn. All of these factors along with the others noted earlier, make the selection of bag fabric an art that requires manufacturer s and plant s actual field tests. Woven fabrics have a low ratio of weave openings for yarn area and generally have a limited face velocity for air flow of about 1.5 to 3.0 cu ft/min/sq ft [47]. 

The materials of construction are usually stainless steel as well as specific other metals that will draw into wire, or crimp without cracking. The wire mesh types have been fabricated of some plastics such as Teflon , polypropylene, etc. however, the surface must be wettable by the liquid, or the efficiency will be poor, and performance data are needed to complete a good design. 

Material of construction The materials of fabrication for this type of packing are more critical to long life due to pad size, wall thickness of metal or plastic components, and actual selection based on the system corrosion, hydrogen attack, and oxygen attack in the column environment.

On August 14, 2002, a 1-in chlorine transfer hose (CTH) used in a rail-car offloading operation at DPC Enterprises in Festus, Missouri, catastrophically ruptured and initiated a sequence of events that led to the release of 48,000 lb of chlorine into neighboring areas. The material of construction of the ruptured hose was incorrect. The distributor fabricated bulk CTH with Schedule 80 Monel 400 end fittings and a high-density polyethylene spiral guard. Three hoses were shipped directly to the Festus facility from the distributor two were put into service on June 15, 2002. The hose involved in the incident failed after 59 days in service. 

In addition, many elements are, in and of themselves, materials of construction. Aluminum and copper are just a few examples of elements that are used extensively for fabricating mechanical parts. Elements have special electrical characteristics, too. Silver and gold are used not just for jewelry, but also for a wide variety of electrical components. We will visit all of these topics in the course of this textbook.
