Automotive sealant

Highest molecular weight and most permanent monomeric phthalate plasticizer commercially available. Used for high temperature rated PVC insulation. Other end uses include traffic cones, automotive sealants, fabric coatings, fishing lures and shoe compounds. 

The nature of the shear viscosifying component and possibly the magnitude of the shear viscosity can contribute to the magnitude of the DUEVs (42). This information will relate to many applications in which extrusion rates are not totally extensional in nature (e.g., automotive sealants and mobility control studies (23, 26) in which the permeability of the formation is a critical factor). For roll-applied films, the magnitude of these different deformation rates (16) are significantly different (Figures 8 and 9) and their relative contribution to a formulation s performance may be complex. 

Polyurethane has a special place here because it is used to obtain elastomeric properties required in construction and some automotive sealants. Air floated and water-washed grades of kaolin are widely used in paper, packaging and construction adhesives based on starch, emulsion and latex based waterborne systems. They are also used in fabric adhesives, mastics and caulking compoimds. Calcined kaolin is used as a low moisture reinforcing agent in one or two part construction and automotive sealants based on butyl, methane and silicone elastomers. Calcined kaolin is less acidic and so can be used with precipitated calcium carbonate in polysulfide sealants. Typical loading of kaolin fillers are 5 to 25% in adhesives, 5 to 20 % in sealants, and 25 to 50 % in mastics. 

Plastisol usage for automotive sealants is typically 10-20 pounds (4.5-9 kg) per vehicle. The plasticizer levels may vary over a range from 50 to 200 phr likewise, the filler types and concentration vary widely, ranging from 30 to 600 phr. A typical formulation may start with 100 parts PVC copolymer, 100 phr DINP, 100 phr CaCOs, plus adhesion promoters, viscosity control agents. 

Benzoflex 284 propylene glycol dibenzoate. This ester is a very good solvator. When compounded in vinyl, it has excellent stain resistance for resilient flooring applications. It also is useful in automotive sealant plastisols.

A Automotive Plastisol Sealants Plastisol sealants are used to seal seams in automobiles. The type of plasticizer required depends on where the seal is used, as well as the plastisol cure conditions. Benzoflex 1046, 2088, 284, and 131 have been used in this application. Table 8.18 lists a starting formulation for an automotive sealant. 

Automotive Sealants In filling underbody dead spaces, foamed plastisols compete with urethanes and other products. Such plastisols are highly filled, often with over 100 phr calcium carbonate, and plasticizer levels of 100-140 phr. Adhesion promoters for metal bonding (Chapter 12) are used with 2-4 phr of 5-7 p,m AZO, yielding expansion factors of 1.5-2.
