Two-part sealant

Methyltrifluoropropylsiloxane Containing Elastomer. A two-part sealant formulation shown below was employed. [Pg.47]

Black rubber can sensitize hydraulic engineers. Assembly workers build the frame and both rivet and seal. Set-up men, riveters, retouching specialists, and engine fitter-mechanics may come into contact with sealants that may contain phenol-formaldehyde resin (Beck 1989), epoxy base (Handley and Burrows 1994), hexavalent chromate in hardeners for epoxy-based sealants (Handley and Burrows 1994) and polysulfides in two-part sealant bases (Wilkinson and Beck 1993 Bruze et al. 1996). Thiocol, a synthetic rubber based on polysulfide polymers, is used by aircraft fitters to dip screws and rivets into before use, and a fingertip dermatitis localized to the thumb and first two fingers of the dominant hand was seen in five of six fitters with positive patch-test reactions to the polysulfide-polymer-containing system (Wilkinson and Beck 1993). [Pg.806]

Two-part sealants, such as the chemically curing two-part polysulfide, silicone, epoxy or urethane resilient sealants, are applied on-site by mixing two parts the polymer base part and the catalyst together and within the pot-life of hardening, which is usually one hour, the sealant is obtained. Chemically curing thermosets have much greater service lives than the others, and they usually need adhesion additives in order to achieve a proper bond to a surface. [Pg.55]

PU two-part sealants cure to a durable rubber consistency with high elasticity, abrasion/indentation resistance and bonding strength over a wide range of temperatures. [Pg.56]

Both the one-part and two-part sealants can be made in a range of viscosities and rheologies, from flowable and self-leveling to pastelike thixotropic compositions that will not sag significantly when applied to a vertical surface. [Pg.525]

Like the 1-RTV systems, the two-part room temperature vulcanization systems (2-RTV) cure to produce flexible elastomers that resist humidity and other harsh environments. Interestingly, they display primerless adhesion property to many substrates, and are used in silicone adhesives, sealants, seals, and gaskets, to name a few. [Pg.685]

Epoxies Powder, one and two-part liquids and paste Many types of resins available, providing wide spectrum of properties. Easy to compound. Low shrinkage and excellent dimensional stability. Good to excellent adhesion. May be cast or molded. Coatings, sealants, adhesives, solderless PC boards. [Pg.390]

The formulation ofmoisture-ujriiig silicones includes a silicone polymer, filler, a moisture-reactive cross-linker, and sometimes a catalyst. A newer class of silicone sealants are known as the silicone latex sealants. These sealants are silicone-in-water emulsions that cure by evaporation of the emulsifying water. Addition-curing silicones in general are two-part systems that cure by the platinum-catalyzed reaction of a silicone hydride with typically a vinyl group attached to silicon. Because no by-products are generated by the cure, there are few volatiles and no shrink in thick sections. [Pg.1462]

Medium-molecular-weight PMTFPS with vinyl or hydroxyl end blocks are used for adhesives and sealants. They are cured either at ambient temperature (RTV-room temperature vulcanization) or at elevated temperature. One-part moisture-activated RTV sealants have been available commercially for many years. Because of then-very high resistance to jet engine fuels, excellent flexibility at very low temperatures, and high thermal stability, they have been used in both military and civilian aerospace applications.78 Two-part, heat-cured fluorosilicone sealants have been used in military aircraft applications and for sealing automotive fuel systems.79 Special class of fluorosilicone sealants are channel sealants or groove injection sealants, sticky, puttylike compounds, which do not cure. They are used to seal fuel tanks of military aircraft and missiles.75... [Pg.118]

In this type of sealant, the sealant consists of two parts, one containing polymer (also called the base) and a separate component containing the curing agent. These are combined by a mechanical mixer prior to application. Proper mixing is attained in approximately five minutes. Incomplete mixing is indicated by the appearance of streaks in the mix (if the two components are of different colour). At ambient temperatures the pot-life is about three hours. The pot-life decreases with increase in temperature. It is possible to increase or decrease the pot-life by incorporation of an accelerator or a retarder, respectively. At ambient temperatures the sealant cures to form a rubber-like solid. [Pg.168]

Reference standards have been adopted for polysulphide sealants in countries such as Australia (Doc. 1572-1970), Canada (19 GP 13a-1970), Japan (JIS-5724-1969) and other countries. However, a good two-component sealant can meet British Standard BS 4254, US Federal Specification TT-S-00227 E and ASTM C-920. Fuel-resistant two-part polysulphide sealants comply with BS 5212-75 and US Federal Specification SS-S-200 D. Sealants used for water retaining and excluding meet the requirement of BS 6920. Polysulphide sealants used for fire protection comply with BS 4254-1983. Additionally these sealants are non-combustible to BS 476, part 4 1984. All these categories will be discussed under separate head-... [Pg.168]

Two-part polysulphide sealants in the cured state have elastoplastic and elastic characteristics. A movement accommodation factor of 25%-30% is possessed by low-modulus sealants and one of 10%-20% by high-modulus sealants. The life expectancy is 20-25 years. They are more suitable for sealing larger joints and also joints that are subject to a somewhat larger degree of movement than are one-component sealants. [Pg.169]

BS 4524 1983 (1991) Specification for two-part polysulphide-based sealants (test methods included). [Pg.229]

Sealants incorporating a typical loading (two parts per hundred parts resin) of DYNASYLAN DAMO-T adhesion promoter are known to offer good adhesion to glass, aluminum, various polar plastics, and concrete. Decreasing the silane concentration results in poor adhesion. It is evident that the type and amount of diaminosilane adhesion promoter has a significant effect on the crosslink... [Pg.763]
