Sealant coalings

Hydrocarbon resin is a broad term that is usually used to describe a low molecular weight thermoplastic polymer synthesized via the thermal or catalytic polymerization of coal-tar fractions, cracked petroleum distillates, terpenes, or pure olefinic monomers. These resins are used extensively as modifiers in the hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesive industries. They are also used in numerous other appHcations such as sealants, printing inks, paints, plastics, road marking, carpet backing, flooring, and oil field appHcations. They are rarely used alone. [Pg.350]

Other uses for coal-tar pitch include production as a binder for foundry cores, as a sealant for dry batteries, and in the manufacture of clay pigeons. PeUeted pitch used as the binder in foundry cores is a hard pitch suppHed as spherical granules which are formed by a spray-cooling process. Clay pigeons consist of disks molded from a mixture of hard pitch and a mineral filler such as clay or limestone dust. [Pg.348]

Coal tar pitch is the most widely used resinous extender for epoxy resins. It is primarily used in surface coating formulations, but can also be used as a cost reducer and flexibi-lizer in epoxy adhesives and sealants. In addition to the increase in flexibility (and reduction in thermal and chemical resistance), coal tar pitch extenders provide excellent water resistance. Their primary applications, therefore, are often in the marine, pipe, tank, and general industrial maintenance areas. [Pg.161]

Pitch-polyurethane sealants. Polyurethane sealants can be formulated in combination with pitch or coal tar in order to impart the property of fuel and oil resistance. Such sealants comply with British Standard BS 5212 and US Federal specification SS-S-200E. [Pg.83]

In the case of vertical and inclined joints, a shore A hardness of 15-30 is acceptable. Sealants used for pedestrian pavements, or sidewalks, require a minimum hardness of around 25 to withstand pedestrian traffic loads, particularly penetration by stiletto heels. Coal-tar-modified sealants used for airport runways should have a hardness range between 5 and 10. A shore A hardness above 45 makes the modulus higher and reduces the movement capability. [Pg.169]

This is an important and growing application for chemical-resistant and oil-resistant polysulphide sealants. As a result of a survey commissioned in Germany by the Association for Mineral Oil, Natural Gas and Coal (Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft fiir Erdbl, Erdgas und Kohle, 1989, 1991) it was found that less volatile diesel fuels permeate into the ground and contaminate the water-table. It was roughly estimated that one litre of diesel can spoil a million litres of water. The problem is more serious in areas where the water-table is near to the surface. [Pg.173]

Use Binder for carbon electrodes, base for paints and coatings. Impregnation of fiber pipe for electrical conduits and drainage, foundry core compounds, briquetting coal, tar-bonded refractory brick, paving and roofing, plasticizers for elastomers and polymers, extenders, saturants, impregnants, sealants. [Pg.311]

MAJOR USES Used as raw materials for plastics, solvents, dyes, drugs, paints, pipe coatings, roads, roofing, pesticides, sealants, to produce hydrogen, to extract metal from their ores, to manufacture graphite and electrodes, coal tar used in treatment of skin disorders. [Pg.57]

In addition to their use on highways and roofs, both hot poured and room temperature hardening bituminous compositions have been used as caulking materials and sealants in building construction. The classical agphalt/ashestos sealants contained volatile solvents and their resistance to solvents was increased by the incorporation of coal tar. These sealants have also been modified by the addition of elastomers, such as powdered rubber, and fillers, such as sawdust.12... [Pg.102]

Filled liquid neoprene sealants are cured at room temperature by the addition of lead oxide, tertiary amines or epoxy resins. Neoprene sealants covered by a top coat of white chlorosulfonated polyethlyene are being used on solar collectors.21 Mixtures of carboxyl terminated acrylonitrile elastomers (CTBN) and liquid epoxy resins cure readily at room temperature in the presence of bis phenol A and amines.22 Coal tar-epoxy resin, two component epoxy resin, and epoxypolyester resin systems have been used as sealants.22... [Pg.102]

Products and Uses Tar obtained from coal. Produced in making coke for steel. Coal tar originally was the major source of organic chemicals, which are currently obtained from natural gas and petroleum. Used for roads, waterproofing, paints, pipe coatings, surfacings, insulation, pesticides, sealants, adhesives, hair coloring products, and makeup. [Pg.94]
