If the light and heavy key components form an azeotrope, then something more sophisticated than simple distillation is required. The first option to consider when separating an azeotrope is exploiting change in azeotropic composition with pressure. If the composition of the azeotrope is sensitive to pressure and it is possible to operate the distillation over a range of pressures without any material decomposition occurring, then this property can be used to... [Pg.78]

In addition, one other feature of the prefractionator arrangement is important in reducing mixing effects. Losses occur in distillation operations due to mismatches between the composition of the column feed and the composition on the feed tray. Because the prefractionator distributes component B top and bottom, this allows greater freedom to match the feed composition with one of the trays in the column to reduce mixing losses at the feed tray. [Pg.151]

Ions are also used to initiate secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) [ ], as described in section BI.25.3. In SIMS, the ions sputtered from the surface are measured with a mass spectrometer. SIMS provides an accurate measure of the surface composition with extremely good sensitivity. SIMS can be collected in the static mode in which the surface is only minimally disrupted, or in the dynamic mode in which material is removed so that the composition can be detemiined as a fiinction of depth below the surface. SIMS has also been used along with a shadow and blocking cone analysis as a probe of surface structure [70]. [Pg.310]

Composites can be created ia which the core optimizes desired physical properties such as modulus, whereas the outer layer optimizes surface coasideratioas aot inherent ia the core material. SoHd outer—foam core can provide composites with significant reductions ia specific gravity (0.7). Pentaerythritol is used in self-extinguishing, non dripping, flame-retardant compositions with a variety of polymers, including olefins, vinyl acetate and alcohols, methyl methacrylate, and urethanes. Phosphoms compounds are added to the formulation of these materials. When exposed to fire, a thick foam is produced, forming a fire-resistant barrier (see Elame retardants) (84—86). [Pg.466]

Uses. Lithium fluoride is used primarily in the ceramic industry to reduce firing temperatures and improve resistance to thermal shock, abrasion, and acid attack (see Ceramics). Another use of LiF is in flux compositions with other fluorides, chlorides, and borates for metal joining (17) (see Solders). [Pg.206]

Rhenium hexafluoride is a cosdy (ca 3000/kg) material and is often used as a small percentage composite with tungsten or molybdenum. The addition of rhenium to tungsten metal improves the ductility and high temperature properties of metal films or parts (11). Tungsten—rhenium alloys produced by CVD processes exhibit higher superconducting transition temperatures than those alloys produced by arc-melt processes (12). [Pg.233]

Lithium hydride reacts vigorously with siUcates above 180°C. Therefore, glass, quart2, and porcelain containers cannot be used in preparative processes. That only traces dissolve in polar solvents such as ether reflects its significant (60—75%) covalent bond character. It is completely soluble in, and forms eutectic melting compositions with, a number of fused salts. [Pg.297]

Many of the physical properties are not affected by the optical composition, with the important exception of the melting poiat of the crystalline acid, which is estimated to be 52.7—52.8°C for either optically pure isomer, whereas the reported melting poiat of the racemic mixture ranges from 17 to 33°C (6). The boiling poiat of anhydrous lactic acid has been reported by several authors it was primarily obtained duriag fractionation of lactic acid from its self-esterification product, the dimer lactoyUactic acid [26811-96-1]. The difference between the boiling poiats of racemic and optically active isomers of lactic acid is probably very small (6). The uv spectra of lactic acid and dilactide [95-96-5] which is the cycHc anhydride from two lactic acid molecules, as expected show no chromophores at wavelengths above 250 nm, and lactic acid and dilactide have extinction coefficients of 28 and 111 at 215 nm and 225 nm, respectively (9,10). The iafrared spectra of lactic acid and its derivatives have been extensively studied and a summary is available (6). [Pg.512]

The macroscopic orientation of their extended-chain crystals depends on the orientation imparted by flow during mol ding. Because of the fibrous nature of the extended-chain crystals, these materials behave as self-reinforcing composites, with excellent mechanical properties. [Pg.433]

AH of these factors contribute to the manufacturing cost of the composite product and thereby determine not only the most cost-effective composite process to use but also the competitive position of composites with the other materials of constmction. [Pg.94]

Sophisticated stmctural analysis techniques make it possible to determine both the amount and exact orientation of reinforcement that the product wQl need to meet the critical stresses in actual service. Hybrid reinforcement systems containing different fiber compositions with different properties are being increasingly used. For example, hybrid carbon and glass fiber automotive drive shafts are in commercial use. [Pg.96]

Beryllium and aluminum are virtually insoluble in one another in the soHd state. The potential therefore exists for an aluminum—beryllium metal matrix composite with lower density and higher elastic modulus, ie, improved specific modulus, than conventional aluminum alloys produced by ingot or powder metal processing. At least one wrought composite system with nominally 62 wt % Be and 38 wt % A1 has seen limited use in aerospace appheations (see Composites). [Pg.73]
