Sealants metal seals

Glass solders and sealants for glass-to-glass joining and hermetic glass-to-metal sealing... [Pg.155]

Work done here for the past two years has involved a program to develop such sealants for launch-vehicle use by NASA, Huntsville, Alabama. These sealants are required for use in manufacturing operations and in making field repairs that would otherwise be very expensive and time-consuming. Ideally, the sealants and seal materials must retain a measure of flexibility or toughness at temperatures down to 20 K. However, materials of considerable utility will be developed if adhesion to metal substrates and resistance to bend loading and shock and vibration can be achieved at 76°K. [Pg.153]

All these mica materials exhibit a uniform dielectric constant along with high resistivity. Usually, primary leak paths in compressed mica seals are the interfaces between mica sealants and the ceramic/metal component. Hgure 5.6a shows the gas-light seal formed by mica crystals and the predominant leakage routes. To improve the performance of mica seals, mica powder can be placed inside the gaps in corrugated metal seals O ig. 5.6b). [Pg.156]

As a final step, anodized parts must be sealed to ensure corrosion resistance of the anodic coating. Sealing involves plugging the anodic pores completely so contaminants caimot reach the base metal. A variety of sealing methods are used by anodizers (see Sealants). [Pg.225]

Aircraft Sealants. Polysulfides have been used for sealing fuel tanks and aircraft stmctural components since the 1940s. There are stringent requirements for these sealants. They must have outstanding resistance to fuels and exceUent adhesion to many different materials such as various metal aUoys and protective coatings used in aircraft constmction. The sealants must also perform in extremely variable weather conditions (10). The polysulfides have an exceUent performance record. [Pg.458]

In the adhesives area, thermoplastic, fatty polyamides are used in hot-melt and heat-seal adhesives for leather, paper, plastic and metal. Blends of EDA- and DETA-based polyamides are suggested for use in metal can seam sealants with improved toughness (234) pressure sensitive adhesives have been formulated with DETA-based polyamides (235) and anionic and cationic suspensoid adhesives are used as heat-seal coatings in paper converting (236). PIP and certain PIP derivatives are used with EDA in some appHcations (237). [Pg.47]

When metal inserts require hermetic sealing, consider coating them with a flexible elastomer such as an RTV rubber, polyurethane, or epoxy system. A second method is to design an annular space or reservoir at one end of the insert from which to dispense the flexible elastomers to effectively create a hermetic seal. Flexible sealants are also used to compensate for differences in the thermal coefficient of expansion between metal and plastic. [Pg.270]

In addition to the YSZ electrolyte and metallic interconnect, SOFC stack also includes component materials such as seals and manifolds. Sealant materials based on glass or... [Pg.165]

Seal Welding. Seal welding taper-threaded joints should be considered for hydrogen gas inside buildings. Taper-threaded joints shall not be seal welded unless the composition of the metals in the joint is known and proper procedures for those metals are followed. Thread sealants shall not be used and the weld material shall cover the full circumferential length of the thread. [Pg.106]

When aggressive gases or vapors have to be pumped, valves made of stainless steel and sealed with VITILAN sealant are usually used. For nuclear technology, valves have been developed that are sealed with special elastomer or metal gaskets. We will be pleased to provide further design information for your area of application upon request. [Pg.74]

All ductwork should be sealed in accordance with SMACNA Class A rating, which requires all seams, joints, fasteners, penetrations, and connections to be sealed. Sealant should be FDA acceptable for the application, and nonhydrocarbon based. Leakage rates as low as 1% total airflow are not uncommon. All ducts passing through a clean room wall or floor should be provided with stainless steel sheet metal collars and sealed at the opening. Details of sealing methods should be provided on the design documents. [Pg.47]

Self-levelling polyurethane sealants are used to seal horizontal movement joints and construction joints in a variety of materials subject to light traffic such as concrete pavements (Figure 4.4), access roads, yards, parking areas, between rails and metal enclosures and around equipment and machinery. [Pg.83]

Use (Solid) Mechanical rubber products, lining oilloading hose and reaction equipment, adhesive cement, binder for rocket fuels, coatings for electric wiring, gaskets and seals. (Liquid) Specialty items made by dipping or electrophoresis from the latex. (Foam) Adhesive tape to replace metal fasteners for automotive accessories, seat cushions, carpet backing, sealant. [Pg.881]

The E-design stack, shown in Fig. lA, consists of a relatively thick metallic interconnect with machined gas channels on both sides and a metallic picture frame for the cell, brazed to the interconnect by a metal solder. Sealing is obtained by glass ceramic sealants applied to the planar cell and frame surfaces using an automated dispenser. A fine Ni-mesh is spot-welded to the fuel side of the interconnect in order to improve the electrical contact between interconnect and anode substrate. On the air side usually a lanthanum cobaltite (LC) contact layer is sprayed onto the ribs of the interconnect. [Pg.124]
