Shear Horizontal (SH) waves generated by Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) have been used for sizing fatigue cracks and machined notches in steels by Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOED) method. The used EMATs have been Phased Array-Probes and have been operated by State-of-the-art PC based phased array systems. Test and system parameters have been optimised to maximise defect detection and signal processing methods have been applied to improve accuracy in the transit time measurements. [Pg.721]

Quantum chemical methods, exemplified by CASSCF and other MCSCF methods, have now evolved to an extent where it is possible to routinely treat accurately the excited electronic states of molecules containing a number of atoms. Mixed nuclear dynamics, such as swarm of trajectory based surface hopping or Ehrenfest dynamics, or the Gaussian wavepacket based multiple spawning method, use an approximate representation of the nuclear wavepacket based on classical trajectories. They are thus able to use the infoiination from quantum chemistry calculations required for the propagation of the nuclei in the form of forces. These methods seem able to reproduce, at least qualitatively, the dynamics of non-adiabatic systems. Test calculations have now been run using duect dynamics, and these show that even a small number of trajectories is able to produce useful mechanistic infomiation about the photochemistry of a system. One of the principal advantages of hydrides for hydrogen storage is safety (25). As part of a study to determine the safety of the iron—titanium—manganese metal hydride storage system, tests were conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Army (26). Broschka et al. (1983) report results of experimental tests on parallel plate flame arresters in piping systems. Further development of this idea led to the proposal (56) that reactive B=C groups, for instance carbonyl systems, would be able to activate alcohol acceptors AH by generating a related A—B—C—H intermediate (Scheme 8, path I). It seemed that chloral might act as a catalyst along these lines. However, it turned out that the rate of decay in the transition state is too low in all systems tested thus far. Very light and weather resistant systems require very long outdoor exposure times. In order to accelerate the testing of pigmented systems, test methods have been developed which simulate outdoor conditions.
