Tests Simulating Use Conditions. Several simulation tests involving wear and use testing have been developed. The first and only one to be adopted as a standard in the United States is AATCC Test Method 134-1975 for measuring the electrostatic propensity of carpets (60). In this test a person wearing standard neoprene and leather sole shoes and carrying a probe connected to an electrometer walks on a carpet for 30 to 60 s until the measured body voltage builds up to a maximum. [Pg.291]

There is a great difference between various simulators (5) in terms of how easily and how well the hypothetical calculation units can be incorporated in the simulation. The trial-and-error calculations, which ate called iterative calculations, do not always converge for every flow sheet being simulated. Test problems can be devised to be tried with various simulators to see if the simulator will give a converged solution (11). Different simulators could take different numbers of iterations to converge and take different amounts of computet time on the same computet. [Pg.73]

Any of the three RS is adequate to derive a time history of an earthquake to simulate test conditions in a laboratory. This, however, being a complex subject, assistance must be obtained from experts in the field for constructing an RS for laboratory testing, preparing... [Pg.441]

With these data, one can determine the dielectric curve the machine must have when switched with such an interrupting device. This can be compared with the actual dielectric curve of the machine (Figure 17.18) obtained from its manufacturer to decide the compatibility of the interrupting device for the machine or vice versa and the extent of surge protection, if necessary. For more details and results of similar simulation tests, see Central Board of Irrigation and Power (1995). [Pg.578]

For adequate protection of the machine it is essential to know the amplitude, F, and the rise time, /, of the severest voltage surge (FOW) that may occur on the system. It is recommended that the actual field tests be conducted for large installations according to the recommended simulation test circuits, noted above, to ascertain these surges. [Pg.578]

A simulational test [19] of the power law (39) can be seen in Fig. 15(a). As it is clear from the raw data, presented in the insert to Fig. 15(a) the data for zjD 1 settle down to constant values, and a region where zjD is still small and a power law is seen cannot be easily identified. The scaling theory, however, is expected to hold only for distances z that are large on the microscopic scale [74]. Studying such a regime where z is very large in... [Pg.590]

LAS is most extensively eliminated in biological sewage treatment plants. The monitoring studies on LAS in sewage treatment plants confirm the measured elimination of LAS in wastewater based on simulation tests. [Pg.94]

The primary biodegradation grades of secondary alkanesulfonates measured by different tests are distinctly above 90%. In the OECD Confirmatory Test (sewage treatment plant simulation test), the biodegradability is 99% (decrease in MBAS, the methylene blue active substance). [Pg.212]

To understand the physical mechanisms of flow boiling crisis, simulated tests have been conducted to observe the hydraulic behavior of the coolant and to measure the thermal response of the heating surface. To do this, the simulation approaches of the entire CHF testing program are considered as follows. [Pg.334]

In the microscopic analysis of CHF, researchers have applied classical analysis of the thermal hydraulic models to the CHF condition. These models are perceived on the basis of physical measurements and visual observations of simulated tests. The physical properties of coolant used in the analysis are also deduced from the operating parameters of the test. Thus the insight into CHF mechanisms revealed in microscopic analysis can be used later to explain the gross effects of the operating parameters on the CHF. [Pg.347]

The gross effects of the operating parameters on CHF are correlated empirically in the range of parameters tested. The selection of which operating parameters to use in a specific correlation should be made under the guidance of insight into the CHF mechanism revealed by microscopic analyses as well as by visual observations obtained in simulated tests as described previously. [Pg.395]

The agreement between the experimental and calculated values of Ce, is excellent. The data shown in Figure 2 are for a constant bake time of 17 minutes. The upper and lower limits on define a cure window. The cure window for the low solids coating is 50 C. The model was further tested by measuring extents of reaction and temperature profiles for samples attached to different parts of a car body which passed through a pilot plant oven. This simulation tested the model under conditions where the substrate temperatures were far from constant. As shown in Table II, the agreement between the experimental and calculated values of Ce is again excellent. [Pg.265]

This means that, to obtain the least variance in a multistage calculation, the intermediates should be constructed to have equal entropy difference for all stages. This criterion differs from the often used but unjustified rule of thumb that free energy differences should be equal in all stages [22,42], Simulation tests show that the entropy criterion leads to a great improvement in calculation precision compared to its free energy counterpart [26]. The same optimization criterion holds for calculation of entropy and enthalpy differences [44],... [Pg.227]

A fully automated procedure can be used to choose the value of r for which the slope of the small-x tail of C7(x) x is minimized. Then the free energy difference is estimated by AArci = CI x). Simulation tests show that one can obtain AA estimates from the Cl extrapolation using much less data than the direct Jarzynski estimates [58]. [Pg.243]

This procedure has been used in several empirical studies (Golden Meehl, 1979 Macfarlane, 1997). However, it has not been subjected to adequate simulation testing. Moreover, the procedure does not allow for some of the powerful consistency tests that are possible with MAXCOV. We find Golden s approach interesting, but its validity and utility require further investigation. [Pg.94]

Worst-case analysis based on the DSC data, namely, the test with the lowest onset temperature, resulted in a graph showing the relationship between initial temperature and time-to-maximum rate under adiabatic conditions. For an initial temperature of 170°C, it would take 2 hours to reach the maximum rate. Venting simulation tests were undertaken on a larger scale to detect safe venting requirements for the separator and for the MNB hold tank. Several vent sizes were tested. It was found that a 10-cm rupture disc with a burst pressure 1 bar above the operating pressure was adequate. [Pg.152]

For many applications it is not possible to put a component into service to test its durability. Similarly, in product testing one cannot always simulate full service conditions in one test or things become too complicated - for example, time-dependent loading plus abrasion plus environmental ageing. Car tyres have a complicated pattern of cornering, sports surfaces are subject to the actions of different sports and pipes in the North Sea have almost unpredictable wave motions superimposed. No simulation test will reproduce service conditions perfectly, therefore, in accordance with Section 4.13, the test has to be restricted to the critical agents of degradation. [Pg.51]

Pigeons can be fooled into using a cue from a false release site before their release, the birds are first brought from their home loft to a site located in the opposite direction from the release site and permitted to smell the air there (Fig. 4.7). In this site simulation test, the released birds flew in the direction opposite from home (Wallraff, 1990 Benvenuti et al, 1992). It is clear that pigeons gain information about the spatial relationship between the strange release site and their home loft by odors they perceive at the unfamiliar site (Benvenuti 1992). [Pg.76]
