Model business

Electronic marketplace/E-commerce In addition to the many databases available and person-to-person contacts, E-commerce in plastics has been conducted through suppliers web sites or the dot-commerce independent web sites that link material buyers with sellers in transactions or auction formats. During the year 2000 five plastic producers/suppliers and various elastomer producers/suppliers created a new and important business model of a joint-venture web site. It provides multiple companies to join forces to do business. This is a strategy some observers call competition and others regard as just another form of selling in. an electronic format. Regardless of how it is perceived, the model will help propel e-commerce into the mainstream of processor procurement due to the size and wealth of the companies involved. The plastic model example is the largest online business-to-business site todate. [Pg.415]

The new major challenge that the pharmaceutical industry is facing in the discovery and development of new drugs is to reduce costs and time needed from discovery to market, while at the same time raising standards of quality. If the pharmaceutical industry cannot find a solution to reduce both costs and time, then its whole business model will be jeopardized The market will hardly be able, even in the near future, to afford excessively expensive drugs, regardless of their quality. [Pg.67]

This leads us to the realm of disruptive technologies. Christensen [8] presents the innovator s dilemma, where the large company focused on meeting current customer demand on a large scale ignores the disruptive opportunity because it looks like too small a market to make a difference on the balance sheet. Further, the opportunity is ignored because it does not fit in the current business model or address the needs of the current customer base. [Pg.433]

The development of start-up companies in the field of micro-systems technology, including microfluidics, has been reviewed by Wicht et al. [244]. Different types of business models are presented as well as the corresponding growth models. The development of start-ups in Germany in the last 10 years is presented and the product offer is discussed. This is compared with the situation in other European countries. Finally, information on problems and opportimities for the start-ups is provided. [Pg.95]

Redesign the business system. Create a new business model in which product, production system, delivery system, supply chain and customer care may all be changed. [Pg.43]

However, this is not just a safe container. It actually switches the business model from sale of a chemical to management of a chemical process throughout the life cycle. SafeChem is fundamentally a service company. [Pg.59]

Managing the life cycle of chemicals for a customer, instead of just supplying their needs, is proving to be a very successful business model. There are major cost savings to be made by the user as it is estimated that for every 1 spent on chemicals, between 1 and 10 are spent on managing the acquisition, inventory and disposal. A specialist company is in a much better position to carry out these tasks cost-effectively than the end-user. This approach is widely used in the automotive sector where a surprising number of chemicals are used. About three-quarters of the main car and truck manufacturers use chemical management services. [Pg.59]

In the given case study, it is possible to introduce additional terms into this comparison which may look at energy implications such as process machinery and infrastructure life cycle energy costs, warranty repair, supply chain PSS, for example, depending on the company s scope and business model. [Pg.19]

The N-Zyme Biotec business model unites three areas synergistically (i) strategic alliances in R D, (ii) a module-based services system for the manufacture and modification of proteins, and (iii) product development. Mainly oriented to the Health Sector, its capabilities could be extended to other industries. [Pg.255]

Using these performance indicators for benchmarking is usually very complex due to the diversity of production processes and business models. For example, processing special chemistry in batch processes usually leads to higher fixed costs... [Pg.15]

For object-oriented design Clear, use case driven techniques for transforming from a business model to 00 code, with an interface-centric approach and high quality assurance. [Pg.19]

Business model (sometimes called domain or essential model) Describes the users world separately from any notion of the target software. This model is useful if you are building a range of software all in the same world or as a draft to transform into a requirements spec. [Pg.36]

The examples we have looked at so far are typically part of a business model.9 The main objective is for the model to represent how the users think of the world with which they work. A great many of the questions that arise during a project can be uncovered by good business modeling. [Pg.37]

The construction of a business model is a subject for a book in itself. Typically, there is a cycle of reading existing material and interviewing domain experts. [Pg.37]

A more detailed discussion of business modeling is in Chapter 14. [Pg.37]

As in the business model, we can illustrate an effect of an action with a snapshot but in this case, the objects in the diagram denote not the real objects but rather the system s own representation of them (see Figure 1.19). For that reason, we draw the objects inside the system boundary, whereas the actions themselves are still actions on the whole system. This reflects the fact that we are not yet designing the internals of the system. [Pg.42]

A system requirement spec often reflects the business model closely, as in this case. Differences occur where the business model is general to several systems or where there are special mechanisms of interaction with the user apart from any domain concepts (for... [Pg.42]

The term domain or business covers all concepts of relevance to your clients and their problems—that is, the environment in which any target software will be deployed. If you are designing a multiplexor in a telecommunication system, your users are the designers of the other switching components, and the business model will be about things such as packets, addresses, and so on. If you are redesigning the ordering process of a company, the business model is about orders, suppliers, people s roles, and so on. [Pg.60]
