Copolymer resinous

To illustrate the specific operations involved, the scheme below shows the first steps and the final detachment reaction of a peptide synthesis starting from the carboxyl terminal. N-Boc-glycine is attached to chloromethylated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer resin. This polymer swells in organic solvents but is completely insoluble. ) Treatment with HCl in acetic acid removes the fert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) group as isobutene and carbon dioxide. The resulting amine hydrochloride is neutralized with triethylamine in DMF. [Pg.232]

Furfural is a resin former under the influence of strong acid. It will self-resinify as well as form copolymer resins with furfuryl alcohol, phenoHc compounds, or convertible resins of these. Conditions of polymerization, whether aqueous or anhydrous, inert or oxygen atmosphere, all affect the composition of the polymer. Numerous patents have issued relating to polymerization and to appHcations. Although the resins exhibit a degree of britdeness, they have many outstanding properties a number of appHcations are discussed under "Uses."... [Pg.77]

Under acidic conditions, furfuryl alcohol polymerizes to black polymers, which eventually become crosslinked and insoluble in the reaction medium. The reaction can be very violent and extreme care must be taken when furfuryl alcohol is mixed with any strong Lewis acid or Brn nstad acid. Copolymer resins are formed with phenoHc compounds, formaldehyde and/or other aldehydes. In dilute aqueous acid, the predominant reaction is a ring opening hydrolysis to form levulinic acid [123-76-2] (52). In acidic alcohoHc media, levulinic esters are formed. The mechanism for this unusual reaction in which the hydroxymethyl group of furfuryl alcohol is converted to the terminal methyl group of levulinic acid has recendy been elucidated (53). [Pg.79]

Throughout the remainder of this article the term homopolymer refers to Delrin acetal resin manufactured and sold by Du Pont the term copolymer refers to Celcon acetal copolymer resins (registered trademark of Hoechst Celanese Corporation). [Pg.56]

The alcohols, proprietary denatured ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, are commonly used for E-type inks. Many E-type inks benefit from the addition of small amounts of ethyl acetate, MEK, or normal propyl acetate to the solvent blends. Aromatic hydrocarbon solvents are used for M-type inks. Polystyrene resins are used to reduce the cost of top lacquers. T-type inks are also reduced with aromatic hydrocarbons. Acryflc resins are used to achieve specific properties for V-type inks. Vehicles containing vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymer resins make up the vinyl ink category. Ketones are commonly used solvents for these inks. [Pg.252]

Many synthetic latices exist (7,8) (see Elastomers, synthetic). They contain butadiene and styrene copolymers (elastomeric), styrene—butadiene copolymers (resinous), butadiene and acrylonitrile copolymers, butadiene with styrene and acrylonitrile, chloroprene copolymers, methacrylate and acrylate ester copolymers, vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl and vinyUdene chloride copolymers, ethylene copolymers, fluorinated copolymers, acrylamide copolymers, styrene—acrolein copolymers, and pyrrole and pyrrole copolymers. Many of these latices also have carboxylated versions. [Pg.23]

A significant use of butylene oxide [26249-20-7] is as an acid scavenger for chlorine-containing materials such as trichloroethylene. Inclusion of about 0.25—0.5% of butylene oxide, based on the solvent weight, during preparation of vinyl chloride and copolymer resin solutions minimizes container corrosion which may be detrimental to resin color and properties. [Pg.373]

The relative U.S. production of styrene homopolymer and copolymer resins is also noteworthy (103) (Fig. 6). The impact polystyrene (graft and polymer blend) copolymers are produced in nearly the same quantities as styrene homopolymers. The ABS resins are synthesized in lesser, yet significant, quantities. [Pg.188]

The electrical insulation properties of the acetal resins may be described as good but not particularly outstanding. There are available alternative materials which are better insulators and are also less expensive. There are, however, applications where impact toughness and rigidity are required in addition to good electrical insulation characteristics, and in these instances acetal resins would be considered. Table 19.3 lists some of the more important electrical characteristics of Delrin acetal resin. Data for the trioxane-based copolymer resin (e.g. Celcon) are virtually identical. [Pg.540]

On the other hand, high impact poly(styrene) (HIPS), ABS, acrylonitrile-ethylene-propylene-based rubber/styrene copolymer resin (AES), acrylonitrile/acryl-based rubber/styrene copolymer resin (AAS) show excellent impact strengths, but these resins are inferior in chemical resistance and abrasion resistance. [Pg.222]

Vinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride copolymers were originally developed for thermoplastic molding applications, and small amounts are still used for this purpose. Extrusion of VDC-VC copolymers is the main fabrication technique for filaments, films, rods, and tubing or pipe, and involves the same concerns for thermal degradation, streamlined flow, and noncatalytic materials of construction as described for injection-molding resins. A significant application for vinylidene chloride copolymer resins is in the... [Pg.1692]
