The alcohols, proprietary denatured ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, are commonly used for E-type inks. Many E-type inks benefit from the addition of small amounts of ethyl acetate, MEK, or normal propyl acetate to the solvent blends. Aromatic hydrocarbon solvents are used for M-type inks. Polystyrene resins are used to reduce the cost of top lacquers. T-type inks are also reduced with aromatic hydrocarbons. Acryflc resins are used to achieve specific properties for V-type inks. Vehicles containing vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymer resins make up the vinyl ink category. Ketones are commonly used solvents for these inks.

When the polymeric initiator contains many halogens, there will be many grafted side chains, and the product is called a comb or brush polymer. A variety of polymers can be used as the polymeric initiator, including polymers containing vinyl chloride and 4-chloromethylstyrene units, and halogenated natural and butyl rubbers. Graft copolymers are discussed further in Chaps. 5, 6, and 9. 

The PADRE system is limited to VOCs. The process is not appropriate for airstreams containing vinyl chloride since it is difhcnlt to maintain vinyl chloride in a condensed form.

C.F.R. 1500.17 enumerates the products that the Commission has determined to be banned hazardous substances under Section 2(q)(l)(B) of the Act. Among these products are mixtures containing carbon tetrachloride, paints containing certain quantities of lead, garments containing asbestos, and self-pressurized products containing vinyl chloride monomer. 

Alternative separation operations can be inserted into Figure 3.5. When distillation is used, it is also possible to recover the least volatile species, dichloroethane, from the first column, and separate HCl from vinyl chloride in the second column. Yet another possibility is to use a single column with a side stream that is concentrated in the vinyl chloride product. Absorption with water, at atmospheric pressure, can be used to remove HCl. The resulting vapor stream, containing vinyl chloride and dichloroethane, could be dried by adsorption and separated using distillation. With so many alternatives possible, the process designer needs time or help to select the most promising separation operations. As mentioned previously, this topic is considered in detail in Chapter 7. 

PVC is a linear polymer. Normal PVC contains a few (< 10) branches per molecule and the existence of more than one long chain per molecule is not probable [22]. The intrinsic thermal stability of PVC material is far less than that of any of the other major polymers. It is also much less than that of compounds containing vinyl chloride monomer units that are arranged in the same head-to-tail fashion [23]. The properties of products depend on the composition of the PVC compound and its processing conditions [24-27].
