Resin injection molding

The first commercial PPS process by Phillips synthesized a low molecular weight linear PPS that had modest mechanical properties. It was usehil in coatings and as a feedstock for a variety of cured injection-molding resins. The Phillips process for preparing low molecular weight linear PPS consists of a series of nucleophilic displacement reactions that have differing reactivities (26). [Pg.442]

Extrusion Resins. Extmsion of VDC—VC copolymers is the main fabrication technique for filaments, films, rods, and tubing or pipe, and involves the same concerns for thermal degradation, streamlined flow, and noncatalytic materials of constmction as described for injection-molding resins (84,122). The plastic leaves the extmsion die in a completely amorphous condition and is maintained in this state by quenching in a water bath to about 10°C, thereby inhibiting recrystallization. In this state, the plastic is soft, weak, and pHable. If it is allowed to remain at room temperature, it hardens gradually and recrystallizes partially at a slow rate with a random crystal arrangement. Heat treatment can be used to recrystallize at controlled rates. [Pg.441]

The chapter is divided into a section on development of process cycles or plans and a section on in-process control. The tools to be discussed include design of experiments, expert systems, models, neural networks, and a variety of combinations of these techniques. The processes to be discussed include injection molding, resin transfer molding, autoclave curing, and prepreg manufacturing. The relative cost and difficulty of developing tools for these applications will be discussed where data is available. [Pg.442]

Compared with other polymeric materials. LCPs have very high unidirectional properties. The fibrous nature of the polymers imparls good impact strengths. [Pg.935]

A high-performance, wholly aromatic copolyester suitble for injection molding was commercial introduced in late 1984 by Dartco Manufacturing under the trade name Xydar. Xydar injection-molding resins are based on terephthalic acid, p,p -dihydroxybiphenyl, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. [Pg.448]

The largest volume applieations of thermotropic LCPs is injection-molded parts. For injection-molding resins, the addition of fillers or fiber reinforced elements into neat LCP resins is utilized to lower cost and improve performace. Up to 25% by weight of the relatively pure recycled nylon is compounded with virgin nylon and reinforcements and is sold commercially as an injection molding resin. This resin with recycled content is not cheaper than virgin nylon due to the cost of separation and purification. While it is used to make engine manifolds, it is not sold in sufficient quantities to divert much carpet from landfills. Therefore, less pure and potentially less expensive composite materials and products based on post-consumer carpet are considered next. [Pg.204]
