Outstanding properties

Furfural is a resin former under the influence of strong acid. It will self-resinify as well as form copolymer resins with furfuryl alcohol, phenoHc compounds, or convertible resins of these. Conditions of polymerization, whether aqueous or anhydrous, inert or oxygen atmosphere, all affect the composition of the polymer. Numerous patents have issued relating to polymerization and to appHcations. Although the resins exhibit a degree of britdeness, they have many outstanding properties a number of appHcations are discussed under "Uses."... [Pg.77]

The most outstanding property of the perchlorates is their oxidising abiUty. On heating, these compounds decompose into chlorine, chlorides, and oxygen gas. Aqueous perchlorate solutions exhibit Httle or no oxidising power when dilute or cold. However, hot concentrated perchloric acid is a powerful oxidizer and whenever it contacts oxidizable matter extreme caution is required. The acidified concentrated solutions of perchlorate salts must also be handled with caution. Ammonium perchlorate [7790-98-9] (AP) is one of the most important perchlorates owing to its high (54.5%) O2 content and the... [Pg.64]

The most outstanding property of the metal alkoxides is ease of hydrolysis. [Pg.23]

Calcined Anhydrite. Soluble anhydrite, or second-settle stucco, has physical properties similar to those of gypsum plaster. It hydrates to the dihydrate rapidly in water. Its outstanding property is its extreme affinity for any moisture, which makes it a very efficient drying agent (see Desiccants). In ambient moisture-laden air, it readily hydrates to hemihydrate. Soluble anhydrite, under the trade name Drierite, is widely used as a desiccant in the laboratory and in iadustry. A small amount is also used as an insecticide carrier. Small amounts of soluble anhydrite are unintentionally produced in most commercial calciners during hemihydrate production. [Pg.422]

Ozone. Ozone [10028-15-6] (qv), O, is an aHotropic form of oxygen having outstanding properties as an oxidant. It is also a powerflil... [Pg.138]

The bisphenol A-derived epoxy resins are most frequendy cured with anhydrides, aUphatic amines, or polyamides, depending on desired end properties. Some of the outstanding properties are superior electrical properties, chemical resistance, heat resistance, and adhesion. Conventional epoxy resins range from low viscosity Hquids to soHd resins. [Pg.363]

From the technical point of view the outstanding property of polybut-1-ene is its creep behaviour. Possibly because of its very high molecular weight the polymer has a very high resistance to creep for an aliphatic polyolefin. One... [Pg.268]

The first commercial applications of polypyromellitimides were as wire enamels, as insulating varnishes and for coating glass-cloth (Pyre.ML, Du Pont). In film form (Kapton) many of the outstanding properties of the polymer may be more fully utilised. These include excellent electrical properties, solvent resistance, flame resistance, outstanding abrasion resistance and exceptional heat resistance. After 1000 hours exposure to air at 300°C the polymer retained 90% of its tensile strength. [Pg.518]

Polymers based on these structures became available as Victrex SRP (ICI), Vectra (Hoechst) and Xydar (Amoco). It is reported that the Vectra materials are based on p-hydroxybenzoic acid and hydroxynaphthoic acid monomers, whilst Xydar is based on terephthalic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and pp -dihydrox-ybiphenyl. Whilst properties vary between grades, in general they possess the following outstanding properties ... [Pg.735]

There remains considerable scope for producing novel block copolymers but these tend to involve sophisticated polymer science and any commercial products are likely to be more expensive than the easier-to-make blends. They would thus need to possess some quite outstanding properties for them to be a commerical proposition. [Pg.880]

The outstanding properties of copper-base materials are high electrical and thermal conductivity, good durabihty in mildly corrosive chemical environments and excellent ductility for forming complex shapes. As a relatively weak material, copper is often alloyed with zinc (brasses), tin (bronzes), aluminum and nickel to improve its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. [Pg.77]

Acrylic is a generic name for derivatives of acrylic acid, of which methyl methacrylate is the most important. Polymerization is controlled to produce chain length of 800 to 3,000 monomer units. A small amount of plasticizer such as dibutyl phthalate may be added before bulk polymerization to assist in deep molding. The outstanding property of polymethyl metliacrylate is 0 transparency resistance to ultraviolet radiation from fluorescent lamps and ability to be... [Pg.281]

ABS has a specific gravity of 1.03 to 1.06 and a tensile strength in the range of 6 to 7.5 X 10 psi. These polymers are tough plastics with outstanding mechanical properties. A wide variety of ABS modifications are available with heat resistance comparable to or better than polysulfones and polycarbonates (noted later in this section). Another outstanding property of ABS is its ability to be alloyed with other thermoplastics for improved properties. For example, ABS is alloyed with rigid PVC for a product with better flame resistance. [Pg.336]

One of the outstanding properties of the austenitic irons is their resistance to graphitic corrosion or graphitisation . In some environments ferritic cast irons corrode in such a manner that the surface becomes covered with a layer of graphite. This compact graphite layer, being more noble than the matrix, markedly increases the rate of attack. The austenitic irons rarely form this... [Pg.603]

The production process and the principal properties of this system have been described in detail in the section on traction battery separators (see Sec. 9.2.3.1). The outstanding properties, such as excellent porosity (70 percent) and resulting very low acid displacement and electrical resistance, come into full effect when applied in open stationary batteries. Due to the good inherent stiffness the backweb may even be reduced to 0.4 mm, reducing acid displacement and electrical... [Pg.277]

An outstanding property of EPS is its extremely low density (when compared to other processes), that by alteration of the preforming treatment can be varied according to the end use. Other types of plastics are employed to produce expandable plastic foam (EPF), including PE, PP, PMMA, and ethylene-styrene copolymers. They can use the same equipment, with only slight modifications. These plastics have different properties from those of EPS and open up different markets. They provide improved sound insulation, resistances to additional heat deformation, better recovery of shapes in moldings, and so on. [Pg.500]

Despite their many outstanding properties, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) rubbers require extremely high molecular weights to develop useful mechanical properties. [Pg.6]

The compact structure of diamond accounts for its outstanding properties. It is the hardest of all materials with the highest thermal conductivity. It is the most perfectly transparent material and has one of the highest electrical resistivities and, when suitably doped, is an outstanding semiconductor material. The properties of CVD and single-crystal diamonds are summarized in Table 7 2.[1][18]-[20]... [Pg.194]

From a historical point of view, organic macromolecules were developed first [5], and the reasons for this are basically twofold. On one side the ease of the preparation of these materials in a controlled and reproducible way [1] and the outstanding properties of the resulting organic polymers [6-8] on the other side the availability of oil on the market and the big effort put by oil companies into the production of a large variety of different monomers at very low prices [9]. [Pg.166]

In conclusion, polyphosphazenes containing fluoroalkoxy groups as side phosphorus substituents constitute one of the most relevant class of macromolecules of this family and have attracted remarkable interest in the past because of their outstanding properties and wide range of applicability, especially in low and high temperature domains, and have received renewed interest in more recent times [399,457]. [Pg.200]

Elastin is a structural protein with outstanding properties, and therefore it has inspired many investigations, with special interest in its elastomeric properties. This behavior can be mimicked with ELPs and these have found wide application in... [Pg.109]

Water is also so abundant and so familiar to everybody that it is difficult to appreciate that it has many outstanding properties some of its chemical and physical properties are remarkably different from those of most other substances with which it would be expected to share certain properties. For example ... [Pg.437]

SE-BR has several outstanding properties. Above all it has improved processability. Carbon black-filled compounds based on commercial BR show the well known bagging and sagging effects on the batch-off mill (13) unless the BR is blended with NR or SBR. Figure 5 shows a compound based entirely on Ti-BR and containing 50 parts of carbon black, at various times on the roll mill. [Pg.62]

Two outstanding properties of FeB metallic glasses are their low magnetic permeabilities and their low acoustic attenuations. The former results from their lack of magnetic anisotropy and has led to their use in power transformers, theft detectors, and various electronic devices. The latter results from the very low dislocation mobility in them. [Pg.179]
