The amount of MW power reaching the sample in the resonator is controlled by a variable attenuator. Like the isolator, the circulator is a non-reciprocal device that serves to direct the MW power to the resonator (port 1 port 2) and simultaneously allows the signal reflected at resonance to go from the resonator directly to the receiver (port 2 port 3). [Pg.1560]

PCR can also be used to modify DNA sequences using primers differing at one or several positions from the target sequence. This is possible because PCR does not require perfect complementarity of a primer to the sequence flanking the target. Since all of the PCR products contain the primer sequence, an insertion or deletion can thus be incorporated into the product by modifying a primer. It is also possible to add new sequences to the 5 -ends of the primers. Modified or additional genetic information may thus be multiplied and transr ported. [Pg.227]

Caffeine is extracted from beverages by a solid-phase microextraction using an uncoated fused silica fiber. The fiber is suspended in the sample for 5 min and the sample stirred to assist the mass transfer of analyte to the fiber. Immediately after removing the fiber from the sample it is transferred to the gas chromatograph s injection port where the analyte is thermally desorbed. Quantitation is accomplished by using a C3 caffeine solution as an internal standard. [Pg.226]

Port-type ted dessert wines require skin contact time to extract the anthocyanins, but the fermentation must be short to retain the sugar level neat the 6—10% level desired. The winemaker cannot always achieve desired composition in individual lots. In order to teach the desired standard, it is necessary to make new lots to enable blending to that standard. The right volume of a tedder, less sweet wine will need to be made to bring to standard a lot with low color and mote sugar, for example, while keeping the alcohol also within the desired limits. [Pg.374]

In 1997, UOP announced the PX-Plus process which also uses a selectivated catalyst to convert toluene to para-rich xylenes. Pina commercialized a TDP process known as the (T2PX) process in 1984 (70). It uses a proprietary catalyst to react toluene at 42—48% conversion with selectivities to benzene of 42 wt % and to xylenes of 46 wt %. The xylenes produced are at equiUbrium. Typical commercial operating conditions of 390—495°C, H2 partial pressure of 4.1 Mpa, H2/hydrocarbon molar ratio of 4 1, and LHSV of 1—2/h. Pina s first commercial implementation occurred in 1985 at their Port Arthur refinery. [Pg.417]

Currendy, there are three commercially available PX adsorption processes UOP s Parex, IFP s Eluxyl, and Toray s Aromax (not to be confused with Chevron s Aromax process for reforming naphtha into aromatics). In all of these processes, the feed and desorbent inlets and the product oudet ports are moved around the bed, simulating a moving bed. [Pg.419]

The Aromax process was developed in the early 1970s by Toray Industries, Inc. in Japan (95—98). The adsorption column consists of a horizontal series of independent chambers containing fixed beds of adsorbent. Instead of a rotary valve, a sequence of specially designed on—off valves under computer control is used to move inlet and withdrawal ports around the bed. Adsorption is carried out in the Hquid phase at 140°C, 785—980 kPA, and 5—13 L/h. PX yields per pass is reported to exceed 90% with a typical purity of 99.5%. The first Aromax unit was installed at Toray s Kawasaki plant in March 1973. In 1994, IFP introduced the Eluxyl adsorption process (59,99). The proprietary adsorbent used is designated SPX 3000. Individual on-off valves controlled by a microprocessor are used. Raman spectroscopy to used to measure concentration profiles in the column. A 10,000 t/yr demonstration plant was started and successfully operated at Chevron s Pascagoula plant from 1995—96. IFP has Hcensed two hybrid units. [Pg.420]

Ma.nufa.cture. AU. manufacturers of butynediol use formaldehyde ethynylation processes. The earliest entrant was BASF, which, as successor to I. G. Farben, continued operations at Ludwigshafen, FRG, after World War II. Later BASF also set up a U.S. plant at Geismar, La. The first company to manufacture in the United States was GAF in 1956 at Calvert City, Ky., and later at Texas City, Tex., and Seadrift, Tex. The most recent U.S. manufacturer is Du Pont, which went on stream at La Porte, Tex., about 1969. Joint ventures of GAF and Hbls in Mad, Germany, and of Du Pont and Idemitsu in Chiba, Japan, are the newest producers. [Pg.106]
