Port Elizabeth

The second field site is at Addo Elephant National Park (AENP), founded in 1931 and located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa near Port Elizabeth. The 14,000 ha fenced study area is composed of sub-tropical succulent thicket and grassland (Low and Rebelo 1996, as cited in Whitehouse, Hall-Martin and Knight 2001 Whitehouse and Hall-Martin 2000). Five main waterholes supply pumped water year round, while numerous natural pans are created during rainy periods. The average rainfall for the region is 445 mm annually (Paley and Kerley 1998). [Pg.82]

Pieter J. Milne was born in Caledon, South Africa in 1955. He completed his undergraduate studies in 1977. After working for 5 years as a pharmacist, he pursued his Masters and doctoral studies under the direction of Dr. L. M. Gerritsma and Professor D. W. Oliver, respectively. In 1994, he was appointed as a lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Port Elizabeth, now known as the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU). He became head of the Department of Pharmacy in 2007 and is also the director of the Cyclic Peptide Research Unit (CPRU). [Pg.697]

Gareth Kilian completed his undergraduate B.Pharm. degree at the University of Port Elizabeth in 1999. In 2002 he completed his M.Sc. degree in medicinal chemistry Cum Laude, also at the University of Port Elizabeth, were his work was directed on the medicinal chemistry of aromatic cyclic dipeptides. He has since worked as a community service pharmacist in 2002 at Butterworth Hospital in the Eastern Cape, after which he was employed as a lecturer in Pharmaceutics at the NMMU, where he currently works. He is a Ph.D. candidate at the NMMU under Professor Pieter Milne, also working on cyclic dipeptides. He has coauthored several peer-reviewed manuscripts in international journals as well as supervising and cosupervising a number of M.Sc. candidates over the past 6 years in the fields of medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical formulation. [Pg.698]

Figure 49.4 depicts the standard configuration of a large port container terminal and is a synthesis of the Port Elizabeth container terminal, one of the four main container terminal complexes within the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (operated by APM) and one of the first container terminals to be built in the 1950s. A port container terminal occupies a substantial area, mainly because of storage requirements, even if this storage is short term. The main elements are ... [Pg.856]

While North End and Central were planned for industry and business respectively, it was South End, with its panoramic view of Algoa Bay and its proximity to the CBD and to the best beaches in the city that became the chief focus for racial re-allocation. When the first eviction notices arrived in May 1965, residents knew that they were pitted against the strength of the national state. The Port Elizabeth... [Pg.1944]

The lack of a municipal instigated racial integration process is not exclusive to Port Elizabeth. As Mueller-Friedman (2006) notes, the situation is similar in Windhoek where she says, the city s de-racialized discourse has been replaced by a purely technical approach to transforming the post-apartheid city. Windhoek s continuing urban morphology after almost two decades without formalized apartheid, is still one of significant racial segregation. [Pg.1953]
