When illegal residues have been found in monitoring studies conducted by the FDA or USD A, the reason has often been that no U.S. tolerance had been requested for that particular pesticide in that specific crop. For example, an imported crop would be deemed to be adulterated and would be seized at the port of entry into the United States if found to contain a pesticide residue in the absence of a tolerance in that crop. This is so even if tolerances have been set for the same pesticide in several crops grown in the United States and the pesticide had been used to control a pest that does not exist in the United States. Furthermore, an international maximum residue level (MRL) might already have been estabUshed for that pesticide—crop combination under the Codex system of standards for food of importance in international trade. The U.S. GAO issued two reports on food safety and pesticides in 1991 (89,90). [Pg.151]

Mondello et al. (2, 20-23) have used a multidimensional gas chromatographic system based on the use of mechanical valves which were stable at high temperatures developed in their laboratory for the determination of the enantiomeric distribution of monoterpene hydrocarbons (/3-pinene, sabinene and limonene) and monoterpene alcohols (linalol, terpinen-4-ol and a-terpineol) of citrus oils (lemon, mandarin, lime and bergamot). Linalyl acetate was also studied in bergamot oil. The system consisted of two Shimadzu Model 17 gas chromatographs, a six-port two-position valve and a hot transfer line. The system made it possible to carry out fully... [Pg.222]

One field study on the mass flow of secondary alkanesulfonates was conducted in the Zurich-Glatt municipal wastewater treatment plant [37]. The concentration of alkanesulfonates in samples of raw sewage and primary and secondary effluents was analyzed using the above-described SPE with C18 Empore disks and injection port derivatization with GC-MS detection. The con-... [Pg.174]

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) consists of dipping a fiber into an aqueous sample to adsorb the analytes followed by thermal desorption into the carrier stream for GC, or, if the analytes are thermally labile, they can be desorbed into the mobile phase for LC. Examples of commercially available fibers include 100-qm PDMS, 65-qm Carbowax-divinylbenzene (CW-DVB), 75-qm Carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane (CX-PDMS), and 85-qm polyacrylate, the last being more suitable for the determination of triazines. The LCDs can be as low as 0.1 qgL Since the quantity of analyte adsorbed on the fiber is based on equilibrium rather than extraction, procedural recovery cannot be assessed on the basis of percentage extraction. The robustness and sensitivity of the technique were demonstrated in an inter-laboratory validation study for several parent triazines and DEA and DIA. A 65-qm CW-DVB fiber was employed for analyte adsorption followed by desorption into the injection port (split/splitless) of a gas chromatograph. The sample was adjusted to neutral pH, and sodium chloride was added to obtain a concentration of 0.3 g During continuous... [Pg.427]

The use of IR pulse technique was reported for the first time around the year 2000 in order to study a catalytic reaction by transient mode [126-131], A little amount of reactant can be quickly added on the continuous flow using an injection loop and then introduce a transient perturbation to the system. Figure 4.10 illustrates the experimental system used for transient pulse reaction. It generally consists in (1) the gas flow system with mass flow controllers, (2) the six-ports valve with the injection loop, (3) the in situ IR reactor cell with self-supporting catalyst wafer, (4) the analysis section with a FTIR spectrometer for recording spectra of adsorbed species and (5) a quadruple MS for the gas analysis of reactants and products. [Pg.121]
