Peripheral ports

The Commodore 128 has several connectors which allow you to communicate with disk drives, modems, and other peripherals. Many oi the connectors are compatible with previous Commodore 64 peripheral ports, but there have been a iew additions and moditications. This introduction to peripheral ports includes information on the VIC-20, 16, Plus/4, 64, and 128.

The second method of connecting a peripheral port is known as the direct-solder method. With this method the individual ports are soldered directly to the motherboard. This method is used mostly in integrated motherboards in nonclone machines. Figure 2.18 shows peripheral ports connected to a motherboard with the direct solder method. Notice how there is no cable between the port and the motherboard and that the port is part of the motherboard.

The basic components of the system are a liquid driver with only one carrier stream, a multi-port selection valve and a detector (Fig. 2.9). The valve is the heart of the sequential injection system and normally comprises 6—10 peripheral ports and a central port in a multi-position valve configuration. The central port is linked to a holding coil and the peripheral ports are connected to different solution aspiration tubes and transmission lines that are linked to different manifold components, e.g., detector and mixing chamber. Only one peripheral port is connected to the central port at any one time. Stream management inside the holding coil is accomplished by a bi-directional piston (or peristaltic) pump. The analyser is fully computer controlled and the injection volumes, residence times, delivery of solutions and analytical path lengths are selected based on a valve timing sequence and related flow rates. 

Intermittent sohds ejection is achieved with the solids ejecting type of disc centrifuge (Figure 7.14). A number of peripheral ports, which are closed with valves, are provided and these are controlled either by a timer or by a self-triggering device that operates automatically depending on the cake depth. The central port of the valve is connected to a two-way piston pump via a holding coil, to address the peripheral ports of the unit, for sequential aspiration of the various constituents, and also to the detector, via the central communication channel. Side ports can also be used for other purposes such as discharging waste or connection to other devices, e.g. a microwave oven, photooxidation system or mixing chamber.
