Free ports, free zones, bonded warehouses Business factors... 

Another special incentive is that of a free port. Usually this is applied for by a company together with a city and state. In a free port the raw materials have no import duty. This means the company can buy the feedstock abroad, process it, and then ship the products abroad without paying duty. However, if the product is sold to someone in the United States the import duty on the product must be paid. This is still frequently a good deal, since the tariff on finished chemicals is often less than that on raw materials. Also, because of inefficiencies, for each pound of raw materials there is less than a pound of salable product. 

In the late 1960s the biggest incentives were available in Puerto Rico. As a result, petrochemical investments in Puerto Rico may exceed 1,500,000,000 by 1975. The major baits were tax exemptions and free ports. Companies making products not produced in Puerto Rico previous to 1947 (true for nearly any chemical) could be granted 100% income tax exemptions for up to 17 years. They were also allowed to avoid the import duties on certain raw materials. For instance, in 1970 (naphtha), an important feedstock for producing petrochemicals, could be obtained on the world market at half its selling price in the United States.3,14... 

Smuggling into Hong Kong is almost impossible to control because 1) it is a free port and the economy of the Crown Colony is dependent upon its being easily accessible 2) many drops are made outside of the jurisdictional waters of the Crown Colony 3) personnel are not adequate and 4) intelligence is lacking.

SL/RN Process. In the SL/RN process (Fig. 4), sized iron ore, coal, and dolomite are fed to the rotary kiln wherein the coal is gasified and the iron ore is reduced. The endothermic heat of reduction and the sensible energy that is required to heat the reactants is provided by combustion of volatiles and carbon monoxide leaving the bed with air introduced into the free space above the bed. The temperature profile in the kiln is controlled by radial air ports in the preheat zone and axial air ports in the reduction zone. Part of the coal is injected through the centerline of the kiln at the discharge end. The hot reduced iron and char is discharged into an indirect rotary dmm cooler. The cooled product is screened and magnetically separated to remove char and ash. 

The first element, dynamic dilution, provides a reproducible sample for each panelist. The system must minimize the loss of the odorant to the walls of the delivery apparatus, provide clean dilution air of odor-free quality, maintain a constant dilution ratio for the duration of a given test, and have no memory effect when going from high to low concentrations or switching between odorants of different character. The type of mask or port and the delivery flow rate have been found to influence the response of panelists in determining odor threshold and intensity. 

In preparative continuous free flow electrophoresis, continuous buffer and sample feed are introduced at one end of a thin, rectangular electrophoresis chamber. A schematic is presented in Fig. 11-5. The sample stream is usually introduced through a single port while buffer is introduced through several ports, essentially producing a buffer curtain . Because the buffer streams are introduced independently, it is fairly easy to establish a variety of gradients (e.g., pH, density, ionic strength) across the buffer curtain . 

When an electric field is imposed perpendicular to the flow, differential interaction between the various solutes and the electric field produce a lateral displacement of individual analyte streams between the two electrodes (Fig. 11-5). Thus, the separations are accomplished in free solution. Individual fractions are collected through an array of closely spaced ports evenly placed across the other end of the chamber.
