Nonlinear refraction phenomena, involving high iatensity femtosecond pulses of light traveling in a rod of Tfsapphire, represent one of the most important commercial exploitations of third-order optical nonlinearity. This is the realization of mode-locking ia femtosecond Tfsapphire lasers (qv).
