Pressure vessels are usually designed with a variety of process connections. Ports for the attachment of valves are included for gas and liquid reagent addition, as well as product sampling and removal. Ports on top of a vessel can also be equipped with dip-tubes to permit access to the bottom of the vessel. Similarly, vessel bottoms can be ported for drain valves or equipped with inverted dip-tubes, usually to act as overflow weirs. Ports are also often provided for the installation of internal cooling coils. [Pg.1251]

Filling and removal port must be easily accessible. Gas bubbles can become trigger sites for dielectric breakdown. Therefore, the filling port must facilitate air expulsion during filling. [Pg.180]

Fig. 6.2-61 depicts two typical designs and arrangements of roller presses for pharmaceutical applications. As mentioned above, small presses in particular are sometimes equipped with rollers one-above-the-other (alternative a2). In this case, the force feeding screw is installed horizontally. It is often said that this design allows for better de-aeration as shown in Fig. 6.2-62. In this diagram, (1) is the raw blend, (2) is a special hopper equipped with a rotating flow stimulator, a separate de-aeration chamber, which is also used for feeding recycle (3) and additives (if applicable), and air removal port (4), (5) is a vacuum pad option for further direct de-aeration from the horizontal feed screw, and (6) is the recirculation of powder leakage [B.13b, B.48, B.97]. Equipment design must incorporate solids removal ports, jets, and/or plates. [Pg.112]

Cholesterol is biosynthesized in the liver trans ported throughout the body to be used in a va riety of ways and returned to the liver where it serves as the biosynthetic precursor to other steroids But cholesterol is a lipid and isn t soluble in water How can it move through the blood if it doesn t dis solve in if The answer is that it doesn t dissolve but IS instead carried through the blood and tissues as part of a lipoprotein (lipid + protein = lipoprotein) The proteins that carry cholesterol from the liver are called low density lipoproteins or LDLs those that return it to the liver are the high-density lipoproteins or HDLs If too much cholesterol is being transported by LDL or too little by HDL the extra cholesterol builds up on the walls of the arteries caus mg atherosclerosis A thorough physical examination nowadays measures not only total cholesterol con centration but also the distribution between LDL and HDL cholesterol An elevated level of LDL cholesterol IS a risk factor for heart disease LDL cholesterol is bad cholesterol HDLs on the other hand remove excess cholesterol and are protective HDL cholesterol IS good cholesterol... [Pg.1096]

Caffeine is extracted from beverages by a solid-phase microextraction using an uncoated fused silica fiber. The fiber is suspended in the sample for 5 min and the sample stirred to assist the mass transfer of analyte to the fiber. Immediately after removing the fiber from the sample it is transferred to the gas chromatograph s injection port where the analyte is thermally desorbed. Quantitation is accomplished by using a C3 caffeine solution as an internal standard. [Pg.226]

SL/RN Process. In the SL/RN process (Fig. 4), sized iron ore, coal, and dolomite are fed to the rotary kiln wherein the coal is gasified and the iron ore is reduced. The endothermic heat of reduction and the sensible energy that is required to heat the reactants is provided by combustion of volatiles and carbon monoxide leaving the bed with air introduced into the free space above the bed. The temperature profile in the kiln is controlled by radial air ports in the preheat zone and axial air ports in the reduction zone. Part of the coal is injected through the centerline of the kiln at the discharge end. The hot reduced iron and char is discharged into an indirect rotary dmm cooler. The cooled product is screened and magnetically separated to remove char and ash. [Pg.429]

To use the port, the overlying skin is prepared using conventional techniques. A local anesthetic is sometimes used to decrease pain of needle insertion, though this is usually not necessary using techniques which utilize small-bore needles. A special point needle is used to puncture the implanted ports as the point of these needles is deflected so it tears the septum rather than coring it, allowing multiple entries. The septum reseals when the needle is removed. [Pg.184]

Other than the wear problems, actual in-plant maintenance usually involves removal of wood, pieces of blasting wire, and other trash from the ports. When a reagentized feed is used, layers of oily reagents can build up on the spiral surface and sometimes require scrubbing for removal. With feeds containing oily reagents that attack rubber, ra-sion-resistant alloy spiral sections are used. [Pg.1787]

If the hub removal is necessary, such as required on compressor with non-split seals, a tapered hub fit on the shaft should be used. The removable hubs should have tapped puller holes. The shaft should be keyless with the preferred method of installation and removal by use of hydraulic dilation. Two injection ports 180° apart should be used whether injection is through the shaft or through the hub. Shrink fits should be 2 to 2.5 mil/in. of diameter. API 671 rcL ommends 1,5 mil/in. minimum, but experience indicates the heavier shrink may be required. For the juncture rating calculation, a f ra lion value of. 12 is recommended. [Pg.335]
