These are fireworks which will cause the firing of charges and of other fireworks quickly and safely in cases where the fuse cannot be used. Port-fires must therefore be capable of burning very well, and must not be put out by even the strongest shower of rain. The mixtures employed must very rich in oxygen, and it is recommended to fuse together the nitre and sulphur mixture used In their manufacture. 

Port-6rcs are about 40 to 0 cm. long, and should give a flame S mm. long. The necessary casing is made of strong cardboard, and is soaked in a solution of nitre so that it should bum easily the diameter is about i cm. The mixture is fiUed into these cases, about S cm. deep at a time, and sHghtly compressed sometimes it is moistened with linseed oil. The composition of some typical port fires is as follows —...

The simplest form is that in which the tube is merely a holder for the priming, which is touched off by a port fire. This is the qnWf Dutch, or common nwUd tube.

Materials and Reactions. Candle systems vary in mechanical design and shape but contain the same genetic components (Fig. 1). The candle mass contains a cone of material high in iron which initiates reaction of the soHd chlorate composite. Reaction of the cone material is started by a flash powder train fired by a spring-actuated hammer against a primer. An electrically heated wire has also been used. The candle is wrapped in insulation and held in an outer housing that is equipped with a gas exit port and rehef valve. Other elements of the assembly include gas-conditioning filters and chemicals and supports for vibration and shock resistance (4).

The blast killed one, injured 19, and idled the facility, that also produces ethylene, ethylene glycol, glycol ether ethanolamines, and polyethylene. Twenty-five residents were evacuated for several hours as a safety precaution. The plant lost all electrical power, for a few days, because its cogeneration unit was damaged. The Seadrift plant, with 1,600 workers, is capable of making 820 million lb per year of ethylene oxide which is one-third of Carbide s worldwide production of antifreeze, polyester fibers, and surfactants Seadrift produces two thirds of Carbide s worldwide production of polyethylene. 

December 13, 1991, a benzoic acid tairk exploded causing six deaths and three injuries at the Dutch chemical firm DSM s chemical complex in Rotterdam Harbor. Shipping traffic was halted for an hour in the world s busiest port while the fire was controlled.

E)ocumentation of flash fires is scarce. In several accident descriptions of vapor cloud explosions, flash fires appear to have occurred as well, including those at Flixborough, Port Hudson, East St. Louis, and Ufa. The selection and descriptions of flash fires were based primarily on the availability of information. 

Hazards to populated areas on land may arise from accidents to ships in port or in coastal waters close to land. Principal liazards associated willi sliips arc fire or explosion on the vessel itself or spillage of a flammable or toxic material.
