The use of accurate isotope ratio measurement is exemplified here by a method used to determine the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea 10,000 years ago. It is known that the relative solubility of the two isotopic forms of carbon dioxide COj) in sea water depends on temperature... [Pg.340]

By experimentally determining the ratio of abundances of C and isotope peaks for CO2 dissolved in sea water at various temperatures, a graph can be drawn relating the solubility of CO2 compared with that of CO2 (the ratio described above). On extracting the CO2 from sediment containing the shells (calcium carbonate) of dead sea creatures by addition of acid, a ratio (R) of abundances of CO2 to CO2 can be measured. If this value is read from the graph, a temperature T is extrapolated, indicating the temperature of the sea at the time the sediment was laid down. Such experiments have shown that 10,000 years ago the temperature of the Mediterranean was much as it is now. [Pg.340]

Only very recently have the government and other health agencies bowed to the preponderance of clinical, experimental, epidemiological, and historical evidence that moderate consumption of wine is not only not detrimental, but is beneficial. The proven benefit is in lowered incidence of cardiovascular complications in wine consumers. Vineyard site is important to wine quaUty and character and interacts with variety. The general climate must not be too cold, too hot, or too humid. A mild, dry climate that still induces a dormant season, like the Mediterranean area and California, is desirable. A relatively constant weather pattern year-to-year is also sought. The nearer to the limits of cold tolerance, for example, that the climate comes, the more likely are disastrous vintages. For marble provenance studies, the most successful technique seems to be the measurement, through mass spectrometry, of the abundance ratios of the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen (116). Cumin Seed. Cumin spice is the dried ripe fmit of Cuminum cyminum L. (UmbeUiferae). The seed-Uke fmit is elongated about 0.31 to 0.63 cm and is yeUowish brown. It is native to upper Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, but is now cultivated in Pakistan, Turkey, India, China, and Syria. It has a strong pecuhar aroma and flavor, pleasing to some and offensive to others. Cumin seed is used in chutney and curry, chili powders, chili con came, cheeses, and the pickling of cabbage. [Pg.28]

Parsley (Parsley Flakes). The dried leaves of Petroselinum hortense syn. P. crispum (Mill) (UmbeUiferae), are from a hardy biennial, native to the Mediterranean region and now cultivated commercially in the United States and southern Europe. The aroma is green and the flavor is pleasant, characteristic, and nuld. Parsley is used for the seasoning of fish, meats, soups, salads, etc. Parsley seed, the dried ripe fmit of the parsley herb, has an aroma and flavor less pronounced than the leaves. [Pg.29]

Saffron. Saffron spice is the dried stigmas of Crocus sativus L. (Iridaceae), a bulbous perennial native to southern Europe and Asia Minor and cultivated in the Mediterranean countries, particularly Spain. Tme saffron should not be confused with either meadow saffron, ie, Colchicum autumnale L. (Lihaceae) also called safflower, or bastard saffron, ie, Carthamus tinctorius L. (Compositae), both of which are occasionally used to adulterate tme saffron. [Pg.29]

Locust Bean Gum. Locust bean gum [9000-40-2], also known as catob seed gum, is a galactomannan extracted from the endosperm of the catob tree seed which is cultivated in the Mediterranean area. The primary use of locust bean gum is in dairy appHcations such as ice cream. It is often used in conjunction with carrageenan because the chemical stmctures of the two enable them to cross-link and form a gel (85). [Pg.443]

Locust Bean Gum. Locust bean gum [9000-40-2] is produced by milling the seeds from the leguminous evergreen plant, Ceratonia siliqua or carob tree, which is widely grown in the Mediterranean area. Pods produced by the carob tree consist of a husk, embryo, and endosperm. The latter, the source of the gum, is separated from the tough outer husk and the yeUow embryo tissue by a variety of rolling and milling operations, and subsequently is milled into a fine powder (60). [Pg.435]

The male Mediterranean fmit fly Ceratitis capitata is similarly attracted to the terpenoid a-copaene [3856-25-5] (176) from the oil oiA.ngelica archangelica and this and the parakairomone tert-huty 2-methyl-4-chlorocyclohexanoate (trimedlure [12002-53-8]) are very extensively employed in monitoring for infestations of this destmctive pest. The female apple maggot fly Jiagoktispomonella is attracted to the apple volatile butyl hexanoate, which is used to bait sticky red spheres to monitor populations and time spray treatments. [Pg.308]

Orange Flower (Neroli) Oil. "The rose we call the queen of flowers, the jasmin the fairest and prettiest princess, but the orange flower is the most fragile and dainty of out royal family of flowers. If the rose stirs our memories, the jasmin our hopes, the orange flower stirs sentiments—sentiments most romantic " (14). Commercial neroh oil [8016-38 J is obtained by steam distillation of the freshly picked blossoms of the bitter orange Citrus aurantium L. subspecies amara, which is cultivated in Mediterranean countries as well as in Haiti and several other tropical countries. More than 125 components have been identified in the oil the principal ones are shown in Table 4 and Figure 1. [Pg.302]

Lavender Oil Spike. Also known as spike oil, lavender oil spike is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops of l vandula latijolia Vik., which grows wild and is also cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region, with most production in Spain and France. There was a time when spike oil, particularly Spanish lavender oil [8016-78-2] found extensive use in soap perfumery however, with the introduction of the less expensive lavandin oil, a hybrid of tme lavender (L. angustifolid) and L. latijolia, utilization of spike oil in perfumery has been reduced appreciably. There are other milder forms of thederiasis that resemble the disease caused by T parva infection. They also primarily affect catde and are transmitted by ticks. Causative organisms iaclude Theileria annulata responsible for tropical thieleriasis, tropical piroplasmosis, Egyptian fever, and Mediterranean Coast fever. These affect ox, zebu, and water buffalo. Endemic areas iaclude northern Africa, southeastern Europe, the southern part of the former USSR, and Asia. Theileria mutans is the cause of benign bovine thieleriasis, Marico calf disease, and mild gad sickness.
