As highways are linear structures, they often traverse a wide variety of ground conditions along their length. In addition, the construction of a highway requires the excavation of soils and rocks, and stable foundations for the highway, as well as construction materials. The ground

In the case of cavity collapse, they hopefully prevent the road falling into the cavity before repairs are carried out (Cooper and Saunders, 2002). 

Another major development of modern control systems is the data highway. Field information going to and received from devices such as thermocouples, transmitters, controllers, and other instruments are converted into digital numbers. The reason for the digital highway, which conveys all of this information to and from the field instruments and the control room, is to reduce the amount of wiring required. For example, some of the most advanced computer control systems for process plants can convey 150,000 bits of information per second using a coaxial cable. 

Hierarchical control is another current concept in which large-scale computers can communicate directly with medium-sized computers which, in turn, communicate with microprocessor control instrument systems and even analog backup instruments.

Handbook 44 defines five accuracy classes for scales in terms of the value of the scale division and the number of divisions. Class I appHes to precision laboratory weighing. Class II appHes to laboratory weighing (precious metals, gems, and grain test scales). Class III appHes to the majority of industrial and retail scales, and to all scales not specified in the other categories. Class III L appHes to vehicle, Hvestock, railway, crane, and hopper scales. Class nil appHes to portable scales used for highway weight enforcement. 

Truck scales weigh highway vehicles they may be installed in a pit or above-ground with inclined approach ramps. A capacity of 100-t is typical. For monitoring axle weights, the scale deck can be broken into three scales, which are monitored independently the individual axle weights or total vehicle weight can be displayed by the indicator. 

The exterior form of MDF is used in special appHcations requiring durabiHty and resistance to water or weather exposure. Highway signs would be an example of this use of exterior MDF. It is an extremely expensive product and thus is used only for special appHcations requiring its special properties. Another example of use would be where a customer would be willing to pay the additional cost to use a composite which has the exceptional quaHties of MDF, but also has virtually no formaldehyde emissions. 

The mesopores make some contribution to the adsorptive capacity, but thek main role is as conduits to provide access to the smaller micropores. Hydrostatic Transmissions. The most recent use of hydrauhc power has been in hydrostatic transmissions which are used in many self-propelled harvesting machines and garden tractors and in large tractors and constmction machines. Apphcations in tmcks for highway operation also are being developed. No clutch is used and no gear shifting is involved, thus this type of transmission could be called automatic, but in all other respects the hydrostatic transmission has no similarity to the hydrokinetic automatic transmission (16).

Solids. Increasing use of bulk cars, especially of covered hopper cars, has accompanied the expansion of the tank-car fleet. The principal drawback of bulk cars is the requirement for limited use, specialized cars, which necessitates a large investment. However, if such investment can be justified, the cost of transportation for dry bulk materials ia hopper cars usually is less than those for goods ia shipping containers. In many instances, such cars are used in closed-loop service that is, they shuttle in unit trains between filling and discharge points. Similar equipment is also used in specialized highway vehicles whose tmck bodies can incorporate dump hoppers and built-in conveyors.
