Interstate Highway system

The cost of transportation has an important effect on the marketabiUty of chemicals. For that reason, transportation, along with numerous other factors, is often a significant consideration in determining the location of chemical production faciUties. In addition, convenient and economical access to water and rail transportation and the interstate highway system, as well as proximity to raw materials and markets, may influence the choice of warehouse and terminal sites for storage and redistribution of chemical products (see Plant location). 

The trucking industry has convinced some states that a tractor trailer can haul two cargo units on interstate highways. The result is that each truck driver can transport twice as much per man-hour. The interstate highway system itself has sped up trucking service. 

We probably have the equivalent of the old route system. Remember Route 66 and Route 25 and Route 50 Frequently, that wasn t efficient to get where we needed to go. What changed We developed the interstate highway system, which took a massive change in thinking. Now we are trying to change the infrastructure to help women move forward. 

The Interstate Highway System is just about finished—after 30 years—and cannot be expanded. There are limits to how many cars can use a particular corridor. By 2020 it will take 44 lanes to carry the traffic on 1-95 from Miami to Fort Lauderdale. Pretty soon there won t be anything left of Florida Just the other day, the new head of the Federal Highway Administration gave me their forecasts for the year 2000. In every urban area over 1 million population, traffic conditions will have declined to service level E or F—stop and go, or just plain stopped. 

While the construction of the national interstate highway system was one great step in twentieth century road building in the United States, the improvement and paving of millions of miles of other roads is another step that further facilitated the mass marketing of automobiles and thus the... 

The building of a hydrogen infrastructure in the 21st century can be compared to the investment in railroads in the 19th century or to the creation of the interstate highway system in the 20th century. 

Life adapts and carries on. The construction of the US Interstate highway system made countless overpasses that inadvertently shaped the evolution of chff swallows. When these birds abandoned their old homes to nest under overpasses, the new artificial habitat resulted in new shapes for swallow wings and bodies. Their wings grew shorter to avoid fast-moving cars, for example. The source of this evolutionary change was human society.
