During the 1920s the following three national specifications for asphalt cements were pubHshed (/) Federal specifications, adopted in 1925 (2) the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications, adopted in 1924, revised in 1926 and (2) ASTM specifications, adopted in 1922 to 1926, withdrawn in 1939, and re-issued in 1947. [Pg.370]

Lead occurs naturally in the environment. However, most of the high levels found throughout the environment come from human activities. Before the use of leaded gasoline was banned, most of the lead released into the U.S. environment came from car exhaust. In 1979, cars released 94.6 million kilograms (kg 1 kg equals 2.2 pounds) of lead into the air in the United States. In 1989, when the use of lead was limited but not banned, cars released only 2.2 million kg to the air. Since EPA banned the use of leaded gasoline for highway transportation in 1996,... [Pg.18]

To date, the vegetable oils that have been seriously considered for use in highway transportation vehicles have been esters of vegetable oils mixed with diesel fuel in percentages of 20% or 30%. However, esters of vegetable oils themselves have very similar properties to diesel fuel, and there is no reason that they would be treated differently from diesel fuel in terms of building codes. [Pg.156]

Transportation of POPs Relevant departments have formulated related provisions for railway, waterway, and highway transportation of POPs. These provisions include Rules Concerning the Railway Transport of Hazardous Goods, Rules Concerning the Waterway Transport of Hazardous Goods, and Provisions on the Administration of the Road... [Pg.164]

Bindan Corp. (Oak Brook, IL) sells several compositions of Ceramicrete matrix composite as commercial road-repair materials. The American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has tested one of these products [6]. Table 14.6 provides the results of their tests. [Pg.173]

As other speakers at this symposium have described, the use of fuel gas produced by biomass or solid waste gasifiers can reduce the use of petroleum fuels in stationary combustion equipment (oil-fired boilers, diesel engines for electric generators or irrigation pumps). Stationary engines and furnaces, however, are not the only big users of petroleum fuels in lesser developed countries (or LDCs, the term we will employ to describe the 88 poorest nations in the world). As is the case for industrialized nations, lesser developed countries need liquid transportation fuels, and probably will for a long time. Brookhaven reports that most LDCs have increased their dependence on highway transport over the last two decades (lb). [Pg.661]

The LT system is divided into three main areas of emphasis soil treatment, emissions control, and water treatment. A schematic diagram of the LT process is shown in Figure 1. The LT process equipment is mounted on three tractor trailer beds for transportation and operation. The unit is suitable for highway transport. The general arrangement of the process equipment and the placement of the trailers during operation is shown on Figure 2. [Pg.62]

Transportation fuels account for a significant portion of crude oil consumed in the United States. Hence, the importance of clean transportation fuels in the nation s economic development, environmental and public health improvement cannot be overly emphasized. Of the total manmade air emissions in the United States, highway transportation is responsible for 57% of the carbon monoxide, 30% of the nitrogen oxides, and 27% of the volatile organic compounds emissions. Driven by the continuing desire of the public for personal mobility, dramatic increases in vehicle numbers and miles have been forecasted. This growth will lead to poorer air quality unless ultraclean transportation fuels are developed and deployed. [Pg.6]

The intermodal concept, which achieved impetus with piggybacking in the 1950s, continues to accelerate its development in the 1960 s and should find increasing realization in the 1970 s. The highway transportation mode will be the master intermodal link, as it is tied with rail, marine, and air in the interchange of cargo and containers. The other modes will continue and extend their linking process—rail-marine, pipeline-marine, and others. [Pg.134]

Highway Transportation. The motor carrier in the 1970s should be characterized by outstanding growth, and evolution in equipment and organizational methods. Because of its door-to-door service, it will remain the key link in the intermodal revolution. [Pg.134]

For example, research on the European public railroad graphic symbols, and U.S. highway transportation symbols showed widespread lack of recognition and lack of correspondence between the pictograph and its supposed correspondence in the minds of the viewers. [Pg.24]

Placarding Requirements These are detailed at 49 C.F.R. 172.500-558. Different requirements are specified for rail and highway transport, and for freight containers and tanks. In general, a placard must be readily visible from the direction it faces securely attached to the transport vehicle, tank, or container located away from obstructions such as ladders, pipes, doors, or tarpaulins and have words horizontally displayed. Illustrations for the required shape and design of placards serving specified purposes are also included. [Pg.322]
