The particularity of acoustic emission tests is that, during pressurization and in real time, they reveal any defects which are evolving and which may lead to premature cracking of the vessel during the test or in serviee.

Nondestmctive evaluation, also termed nondestmctive testing or nondestmctive inspection, is extensively used in weld testing (14). Nondestmctive tests do no impair the serviceabiUty of the material or component under stress. The most widely used tests for evaluation of welds are Hquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonics, and radiography. Acoustic-emission tests are increasingly used. Nondestmctive tests detect and characterize, in terms of size, shape, and location, the various types of weld discontinuities that can occur. 

Test methods are used to detect flaws. As an example when flaws or cracks grow in plastic, minute amounts of elastic energy are released and propagated in the material as an acoustic wave. A nondestructive acoustic emission test has sensors placed on the surface that can detect these waves providing information about location and rate of flaw growth. These principles form the basis for nondestructive test methods such as sonic testing. 

The results of the above experiments could be very important in supporting your theory of the crystal-structure reversion. I should appreciate it if you would send me copies of your papers on this subject. Also, we would like to perform some additional acoustic-emission tests with our more sophisticated apparatus and we need some 1/2M diameter stock of Nitinol alloys. Please tell me how I can get some. 

Fatliquor affects mostly the mechanical properties, measured also by a collection of ASTM methods given in (25). In addition, the sounds emitted by leather when it is deformed are greatly suppressed by the presence of fat, supporting a method of assay by means of the acoustic emission test (27).
