During the 1920s the following three national specifications for asphalt cements were pubHshed (/) Federal specifications, adopted in 1925 (2) the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications, adopted in 1924, revised in 1926 and (2) ASTM specifications, adopted in 1922 to 1926, withdrawn in 1939, and re-issued in 1947. [Pg.370]

Bindan Corp. (Oak Brook, IL) sells several compositions of Ceramicrete matrix composite as commercial road-repair materials. The American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has tested one of these products [6]. Table 14.6 provides the results of their tests. [Pg.173]

Whether applied to an existing road or proposed scheme, a primary resource for conducting the safety analysis is the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials Highway Safety Manual (AASHTO, 2010). The document (planned for an update in 2015) provides a variety of methods for quantitatively estimating crash frequency and severity at a variety of locations, both for existing facilities and for proposed projects. [Pg.149]

Bitumen Insoluble in Paraffin Maphtha (AASHPO T46). This test designated by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is used to indicate the content of naphtha-insoluble asphaltenes in an asphalt. Other solvents such as / -heptane (ASTM D3279), / -hexane, and / -pentane have been substituted for the naphtha solvent. [Pg.371]

Portland cements are manufactured to comply with specifications estabUshed in each country (70). In the United States, several different specifications are used, including those of the American Society for Testing and Materials and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The ASTM aimuaHy pubhshes test methods and standards (24), which are estabhshed on a consensus basis by its members which include consumers and producers. [Pg.295]

Roughness of the pavement surfaoe can be expressed in terms of the variance of the slope measurements of deformation taken along the longitudinal profile of the roadway in accordance with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) definition. In the VESYS IIM program, the variance of rut depth is computed in the rut depth model and is passed automatically to the roughness model. The difference in rut depth is assumed to occur because of material variability of each layer. The roughness output is in the... [Pg.212]

Until well into the twentieth century, the majority of roads in the United States were little more than dirt tracks. The 260,000 miles of railroad in the year 1900 was more than double the 125,000 miles of road that had any type of improved surface (U.S. Department of Transportation, 1976). Only two percent of those were paved with asphalt or concrete—and the majority of these were in urban areas (American Association of State Highway Officials, 1953). In short, the only national transportation network capable of comparatively high speed and volume transportation services at the turn of the nineteenth to twentieth centuries was the railroads. The railroads were an important step forward in mobility however, the capability of the railroads to facilitate automobility was limited. [Pg.37]

With constant updates in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifications for epoxy-coated rebar, this corrosion protection system will continue to improve. The specifications involve all aspects of fabrication of epoxy-coated rebar. All these will result in improved performance of epoxy-coated rebar and more durable new concrete stmctures. [Pg.228]
