While a new tire may have excellent resistance to crack initiation and propagation between the steel belts, an aged tire of the exact same construction can exhibit dramatically reduced crack growth resistance, which in some cases may contribute to tire failure. To further underscore the point, the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determined that tire aging was a main contributor to the Firestone Wilderness AT tire recall [1]. Figure 34.1 shows the failure rate of Wilderness AT tires as a function of tire age (determined from date of tire manufacture). [Pg.955]

These three tests, under the sponsorship of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), were further developed under experimental conditions and under field conditions. It was found that if one failed the one-leg-stand test, the officer... [Pg.83]

The results of sleep deprivation have been linked to motor vehicle accidents, major industrial accidents such as the Exxon Valdez, and Three Mile Island, and the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster (2). The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 1999 estimated that 56,000 police-reported crashes and 4% of all traffic crash fatalities (1550 cases) involved drowsiness and fatigue as principal causes (3). Sleepiness was a probable cause in about one third of all fatal-to-driver motor vehicle accidents involving commercial truck drivers (4). [Pg.211]

National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported an interesting study (NHTSA, 2012) on material substitution from steel to polymer composite in the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado FE model. The substitution resulted in a 19% decrease in vehicle weight (from 2307 to 1874kg) with no effect on safety in front crash tests. However, replacing metal components with composite or plastic is not a trivial process it requires the redesign of the vehicle and therefore demands upfront capital investment as well as design time. [Pg.124]

Every manufacturer of motor vehicles or items of equipment for motor vehicles must report defects related to motor vehicle safety and noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (see Chapter 14). After the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) receives notice of such safety problems, the manufacturer must implement a program to remedy the defects and report progress quarterly in the implementation of that program. [Pg.78]

There are many examples. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) works with auto manufacturers to establish vehicle recalls for safety issues. A huge recall involving many manufacturers and vehicle brands and models dealt with an air bag issue. The model of the device that automatically inflates an air bag sometimes created shrapnel that could injure or kill a driver or passenger. Individuals could look up their vehicle by vehicle identification number (VIN) to determine if the list includes their vehicles in the recall. NHTSA offered the database on its web site. [Pg.554]
