Highway abutments. An approach to solving a safety problem by utilizing whole scrap tires was possible [5] by constructing highway abutment crash barriers made of whole scrap tires. If effective, driver fatality or severity of injury could be significantly reduced.

The simplest and most widespread use of plantings is to cover part or all of a slope with small trees, such as pine, oak, or willow, and/or low ground cover. This is most often done on slopes which are relatively stable by themselves, or can be expected to remain stable until the plantings can take root on their own. Slopes adjacent to highway overpasses and bridge abutments are often treated in this fashion, also creating a more aesthetic appearance than stone block or concrete.

Sand filled epoxy resins find utility as simulated terrazzo flooring, concrete highway and bridge abutment repair kits, and in various other applications where a concrete substitute is required that is convenient to use and cures rapidly. Table 9 indicates the strength improvements that can be produced in these systems by the use of silane coupling agents, both initially and after environmental aging. 

Civil engineering uses include large diameter pipe for culverts and air ducts and energy-absorbing highway safety devices such as crash barriers filled with polyurethane foam and barrels filled with sand installed around bridge abutments. On a more down-to-earth level, the components of portable privies are frequently rotationally molded.
