The first criterion was associated with improved secondary and tertiary petroleum recovery processes. This is the justification for the patent appHcations issued to the Dow (50) and Exxon (51) corporations. The additional costs of production and the increased adsorption of such modified water-soluble polymers are detrimental to the commercial appHcation of such polymers and even the academic studies in this area have decreased in recent years. [Pg.320]

The exterior form of MDF is used in special appHcations requiring durabiHty and resistance to water or weather exposure. Highway signs would be an example of this use of exterior MDF. It is an extremely expensive product and thus is used only for special appHcations requiring its special properties. Further Modifications. Spill Prevention and Detection. It is far better to prevent a leak or a spik than to clean one. The fundamental rule of leak and spik prevention is to reduce the possibkity for contamination by directing resources as close to the source as possible (Fig. 11). Bioprocess Control An industrial fermenter is a fairly sophisticated device with control of temperature, aeration rate, and perhaps pH, concentration of dissolved oxygen, or some nutrient concentration. There has been a strong trend to automated data collection and analysis. Analog control is stiU very common, but when a computer is available for on-line data collec tion, it makes sense to use it for control as well. More elaborate measurements are performed with research bioreactors, but each new electrode or assay adds more work, additional costs, and potential headaches. Most of the functional relationships in biotechnology are nonlinear, but this may not hinder control when bioprocess operate over a narrow range of conditions.
