Highway bridge decks

Tables 3.7 and 3.8 give the ACI (American Concrete Institute) suggested guidelines for the mix proportions of latex-modified concretes for bridge deck applications and patching work respectively.l J Also, Standard Specification ACI 548.4.1 1 provides a guideline for the mix proportions of SBR-modifled concrete overlays, for new construction as well as repair and rehabilitation, of highway bridge decks as shown in Table 3.9.

In a more recent cost of corrosion study (Koch et al., 2002), the annual direct cost of corrosion on US highway bridges was estimated at 8.3 billion overall, with 4.0 billion of that on the capital cost and maintenance of reinforced concrete highway bridge decks and substructures. Indirect... 

These techniques are popular in the United States for delaying, or preventing chloride induced delamination on substructures and bare concrete bridge decks. A recent review of highway bridge deck maintenance practice in the United States (Russell, 2004) found overlaying to be far more popular than the application of cathodic protection. 

It is the behaviour and performance of the laminated structures resulting from the application of surface layers that is the subject of this paper. However, there are wider implications,as similar laminated structures are formed when chemically resistant linings are applied to the inside of tanks and pipes, and as specialised floor/highway/bridge deck finishes.
