Compositional effects

Phonon transport is the main conduction mechanism below 300°C. Compositional effects are significant because the mean free phonon path is limited by the random glass stmcture. Estimates of the mean free phonon path in vitreous siUca, made using elastic wave velocity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity data, generate a value of 520 pm, which is on the order of the dimensions of the SiO tetrahedron (151). Radiative conduction mechanisms can be significant at higher temperatures. [Pg.506]

Many more correlations are available for diffusion coefficients in the liquid phase than for the gas phase. Most, however, are restiicied to binary diffusion at infinite dilution D°s of lo self-diffusivity D -. This reflects the much greater complexity of liquids on a molecular level. For example, gas-phase diffusion exhibits neghgible composition effects and deviations from thermodynamic ideahty. Conversely, liquid-phase diffusion almost always involves volumetiic and thermodynamic effects due to composition variations. For concentrations greater than a few mole percent of A and B, corrections are needed to obtain the true diffusivity. Furthermore, there are many conditions that do not fit any of the correlations presented here. Thus, careful consideration is needed to produce a reasonable estimate. Again, if diffusivity data are available at the conditions of interest, then they are strongly preferred over the predictions of any correlations. [Pg.596]

The Kellogg and DePriester charts and their subsequent extensions and generahzations use the molar average boiling points of the liquid and vapor phases to represent the composition effect. An alternative measure of composition is the convergence pressure of the system, which is defined as that pressure at which the Kvalues for aU the components in an isothermal mixture converge to unity. It is analogous to the critical point for a pure component in the sense that the two... [Pg.1248]

Despite the high cost of composites, the weight-saving they permit is so great that their use in trains, trucks and even cars is now extensive. But, as this chapter illustrates, the engineer needs to understand the material and the way it will be loaded in order to use composites effectively. [Pg.271]

The two curves exhibit theoretical upper and lower limits, respectively, based on a simple composite effect in general. A basic formula that generalizes Eqs. (1) and (2) is ... [Pg.816]

The Gas Processors Suppliers Association [79] provides a more detailed background development of the K-factors and the use of convergence pressure. Convergence pressure alone does not represent a system s composition effects in hydrocarbon mixtures, but the concept does provide a rather rapid approach for systems calculations and is used for many industrial calculations. These are not well adapted for very low temperature separation systems. [Pg.4]

Figure 24. Lattice strain model applied to zircon-melt partition coefficients from Hinton et al. (written comm.) for a zircon phenocryst in peralkaline rhyolite SMN59 from Kenya. Ionic radii are for Vlll-fold coordination (Shannon 1976). The curves are fits to Equation (1) at an estimated eraption temperature of 700°C (Scaillet and Macdonald 2001). Note the excellent fit of the trivalent lanAanides, with the exception of Ce, whose elevated partition coefficient is due to the presence of both Ce and Ce" in the melt, with the latter having a much higher partition coefficient into zircon. The 4+ parabola cradely fits the data from Dj, and Dy, through Dzi to Dih, but does not reproduce the observed DuIDjh ratio. We speculate that this is due to melt compositional effects on Dzt and (Linnen and Keppler 2002), and possibly other 4+ cations, in very silicic melts. Because of its Vlll-fold ionic radius of 0.91 A (vertical line), Dpa is likely to be at least as high as Dwh, and probably considerably higher. Figure 24. At a more molecular level, the influences of the composition of the membrane domains, which are characteristic of a polarized cell, on diffusion are not specifically defined. These compositional effects include the differential distribution of molecular charges in the membrane domains and between the leaflets of the membrane lipid bilayer (Fig. 3). The membrane domains often have physical differences in surface area, especially in the surface area that is accessible for participation in transport. For example, the surface area in some cells is increased by the presence of membrane folds such as microvilli (see Figs. 2 and 6). The membrane domains also have differences in metabolic selectivity and capacity as well as in active transport due to the asymmetrical distribution of receptors and transporters. [Pg.244]

When explosives of the power shown in this table are prepared, the power per unit length of the explosive cartridge is similar to that of the power of a sheathed explosive made from a PI composition. Effectively, therefore, the difference between a P2 and a P3 explosive is that the inert material in the sheath of the former is distributed uniformly through the explosive composition of the latter. For reasons of stability, however, sodium bicarbonate is no longer used instead an increase in the proportion of sodium chloride gives the required cooling effect. [Pg.85]
