Hair straightening compositions based on mixtures of ammonium bisulfite [10192-30-0] and urea [57-13-6] have been introduced and have found some apphcation in the Caucasian hair market. The reformulation of the cystine cross-links in bisulfite-reduced hair is best accompHshed by a rinse, pH 8—10, rather than by the use of oxidizing agents (66). [Pg.460]

Composite-Based Laminates. Grade CEM-1 are laminates with continuous-filament glass cloth surfaces and a cellulose core, all with a flame-resistant epoxy resin binder. With good punching practice, sheets up to and including 2.4 mm (0.094 in.) in thickness may be punched at temperatures not less than 23°C (73°F). Photopolymerizable compositions based on monomeric acryflc or other ethylenicaHy unsaturated acid derivatives are becoming increasingly popular. When multiftmctional derivatives are employed, three-dimensional networks having high strength and abrasion resistance are possible on exposure to light. A typical composition may contain an ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate monomer, a perester phenacjhdene initiator (69), and an acryflc acid—alkyl methacrylate copolymer as binder. [Pg.44]

Titanium siUcides are used in the preparation of abrasion- and heat-resistant refractories. Compositions based on mixtures of Ti Si, TiC, and diamond have been claimed to make wear-resistant cutting-tool tips (157). The demand for cement was stimulated by the growth of canal systems ia United States duting the nineteenth century. Process improvements were made ia the calciaation of certain limestones for the manufacture of natural cements, which were gradually displaced by Pordand cement. This latter was named ia a 1824 patent because of its color and resemblance to a natural limestone quarried on the Isle of Pordand ia England. Research conducted siace that time has provided a clear picture of the composition, properties, and fields of stabiUty of the principal systems found ia Pordand cement. Poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is another semicrystalline polymer used in the composites industry. PPS-based composites are generally processed at 330°C and subsequently cooled rapidly in order to avoid excessive crystallisation and reduced toughness. The superior fire-retardant characteristics of PPS-based composites result in appHcations where fire resistance is an important design consideration. Laminated composites based on this material have shown poor resistance to transverse impact as a result of the poor adhesion of the fibers to the semicrystalline matrix. A PPS material more recently developed by Phillips Petroleum, AVTEL, has improved fiber—matrix interfacial properties, and promises, therefore, an enhanced resistance to transverse impact (see PoLYAffiRS containing sulfur). [Pg.8]

A number of amorphous thermoplastics are presently employed as matrices in long fiber composites, including polyethersulfone (PES), polysulfone (PSU), and polyetherimide (PEI). AH offer superior resistance to impact loading and higher interlaminar fracture toughnesses than do most epoxies. However, the amorphous nature of such polymers results in a lower solvent resistance, clearly a limitation if composites based on such polymers are to be used in aggressive environments. [Pg.8]

Heat-resistant resin compositions based on bismaleknide—epoxy blends are achieved by reaction of a BMI—y -aminophenol [591-27-5] (1 1) adduct with epoxy. This prepolymer is fully cured with an imida2ole catalyst (54). Blends of hydroxy-terminated BMI—aminophenol adducts can easily be B-staged, that is, prepolymerked, and subsequendy ground to provide a powder that can be molded by the appHcation of heat and pressure. [Pg.30]
