Cosmetic chemistry

The use of fragrant substances has been continuous, and the use of Hpids or emoUients for anointing is fully documented in historical writings. However, it is probably not justifiable to identify the recipes passed on from antiquity as cosmetics. The compositions based on folklore and mysticism were replaced by more scientifically acceptable products beginning about 1875. The first edition of a handbook of cosmetic chemistry pubHshed in 1920 included a foreword noting that scientific cosmetic chemistry did not exist prior to that pubHcation (1). A few years later, texts on cosmetic chemistry and other formularies became available (2). 

When I was in high school, we had a very good chemistry teacher. We had two years of chemistry instead of the customary one year in most high schools. My best friend s father owned a couple of beauty salons and manufactured cosmetics. He told both of us that cosmetic chemistry was a great opportunity for women. By the time I went to college, it was Hunter College, I was convinced that I wanted to study chemistry.

These career opportunities are related to cosmetic chemistry. 

Other aspects of penem synthesis are limited to the manipulation of peripheral functional groups, or modifications in the backbone of the C2-sidechain (Scheme 3, J). This is cosmetic chemistry outside the scope of our analysis, although the lability of the penem nucleus makes many such reactions not trivial. Most of published works in this area has been devoted to 2-hydrocarbyl [61b, 136, 146, 150, 190a, 215, 228 - 231] and 2-alkylthiopenems [157, 232, 233] concerned readers are referred to the original papers.

The ability of exogenous proteins to reduce the skin and eye irritation potential of detergents was highlighted many decades ago in the cosmetic chemistry community. First extensive insights were probably those of Meinecke (4), who reported that addition of a protein hydrolysate or a protein-fatty acid condensate to a solution of a highly irritant surfactant (sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate) caused a remarkable increase in the skin tolerability of the product and postulated a protective effect based on the formation of a protein colloidal layer on the skin, which could prevent or minimize the direct interaction of tenside molecules with skin keratin. The same interpretation has been advanced more recently by other authors (116-118). 

In 1945 the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, 2 East 63rd Street, New York 21, was founded to further interest in cosmetic chemistry through seminars and discussions. The Society publishes its official organ, the Journal, nine times a year this gives news of local chapters, international events and announcements. The Society has co-operated with several schools in setting up proper courses of study and awards an annual literature prize of 1,000 for the best research work in any field which might have an effect on cosmetic chemistry.
