Composition formulation, adhesive base/binder

The design of adhesive mortars was based on binders of either hydrate lime-metakaolin or natural hydraulie lime, with the aim of formulating a complex system characterized by the highest compatibility. Nowadays, both hydrate lime-metakaolin and natural hydraulic lime mortars are widely used in the field of restoration and conservation of architectural monuments, due to their capability to enhance the chemical, physical, structural and mechanical compatibility with historical building materials (stones, bricks and mortars) (Rosario 2009). This compatibility is a very critical prerequisite for the optimum performance of conservation mortars, considering the damage caused to historic monuments dming the past decades, due to the extensive use of cement-based composites. [Pg.81]

Poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions for adhesives contain preferably poly(vinyl alcohol) as a protective colloid. Spray-dried poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions, known as redispersion powders, are used in combination with cellulose ethers as binders in floor-leveling compositions and for increasing solids content in emulsion-based adhesives. Polyfvinyl acetates) are used as solid polymers for formulating solvent adhesives. [Pg.12]

While the stain may be visible at the surface of the primer coating after drying, it is effectively locked into the film and does not lead to discoloration of the topcoat. Binders for stain blocking primers are usually based on relatively hydrophobic emulsion polymers with acrylic or styrene acrylic compositions. Primers are expected to have excellent adhesion, and water based primers are formulated to adhere to a variety of substrates including metal, wood, and chalky or aged re-paint surfaces. Since this level of performance may not be needed, or achievable, in many topcoat formulations, the use of specialized primers offers a flexible and cost effective way to meet the performance needs of many different coating apphcations with a limited number of optimized topcoat products. [Pg.152]
