Atlantic

Environmental vulnerability varies considerably from area to area. For example the North Sea, which is displaced into the Atlantic over a two year period,-is a much more robust area than the Caspian Sea which is enclosed. Regional standards should reflect those differences.

Amino acid profiles of FPC ate excellent and compare favorably with whole egg except for tryptophan and lysiae (140). Hake and Atlantic FPCs prepared by isoptopanol extraction have PERs of 3.29 and 3.05, respectively, as compared with 3.0 for caseia (140). Numerous human feeding studies have been conducted with FPC. The results iadicate that high quaUty, bland FPC products can be used as proteia supplemeats but they ate aot suitable for use as a sole source of proteia.

Aromatic Hydrocarbons. Sulfolane is used principally as a solvent for extraction of benzene, toluene, and xylene from mixtures containing aHphatic hydrocarbons (33—37). The sulfolane process was introduced in 1959 by SheU Development Company, and that process is Hcensed by Universal OH Products. A sulfolane extraction process is also Hcensed by the Atlantic Richfield Company. In 1994, worldwide consumption was estimated at ca 6974 t/yr of sulfolane for 137 sulfolane extraction units (see Bix processes Extraction, liquid-liquid Xylenes and ethylbenzene). 

An appreciation of the extent to which invertebrate species may be exposed to such chemicals comes from considering the effects of complex mixtures. In the North Atlantic ecosystem alone, hundreds of pollutant chemicals have been identified. These include metals, synthetic and chlorinated organics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. A number of other chemicals suspected of having endocrine disrupting potential also occur at high levels in the tissues of marine mammals. For example, tribiityltin compounds are present in the tissues of the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias juhatus) from Hokaido, Japan, and in stranded bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) found along the US Atlantic and Gulf coasts.Additional chemicals detected include PAHs, toxaphene and chlordane. ...
