Atlantic coast

Wave size is determined by wind speed and fetch, the distance over the oceans surface which the wind travels. Favorable wind energy sites are generally western coastlines facing the open ocean such as the Pacific Coast of North America and the Atlantic Coast of Northern Europe. Norway, Denmark, Japan, and the United Kingdom are the world leaders in wave energy technologies. [Pg.892]

An "amazing amount of trash", mostly plastic objects, is stranded on the Atlantic coast of Florida during onshore winds, particularly in winter (55). While some of this debris was of United States origin (from local sources or from entrainment in the Florida Current of wastes from shipping), the remainder was of Venezuelan, Columbian, and Jamaican origin. Debris from the easternmost Caribbean and the northern coast of South America could be transported to the Atlantic coast of Florida by the Guiana and Antilles Currents in about four months. Alternatively, debris from the southern or southwestern part of the Caribbean could be carried by the Caribbean Current via the Yucatan Channel and Straits of Florida to the Atlantic coast of Florida in as little as two months. [Pg.231]

In some parts of the United States special precautions may be necessary the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts are noted for hurricanes the plains states have tornadoes and the highest probability of earthquakes occurs in California and Alaska. Care must also be taken when locating near a river to be certain that flooding, which is always a possibility, will not harm the plant. See references 12 and 15 for detailed climatic information. [Pg.38]

Shuman and Michael [10] applied a rotating disk electrode to the measurement of copper complex dissociation rate constants in marine coastal waters. An operational definition for labile and non-labile metal complexes was established on kinetic criteria. Samples collected off the mid-Atlantic coast of USA showed varying degrees of copper chelation. It is suggested that the technique should be useful for metal toxicity studies because of its ability to measure both equilibrium concentrations and kinetic availability of soluble metal. [Pg.333]

In view of these complexities, environmental studies that seek to verify proposed cause-effect relationships between contamination and response need to be carefully designed to avoid bias and misunderstanding. Most environmental assessments adopt a multi-tiered approach to testing, in which combinations of biological responses (biomarkers) are measured in tissue samples, body fluids or at the whole organism level to indicate exposure to or adverse effects of contamination.8. During the southern summer of 1992/93, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and I set out from the Atlantic coast of the Antarctic, aiming to perform the first crossing of the continent unaided by other men, animals or machines. Behind us we each towed sledges weighing 222 kg which contained 100 days of food, fuel and essential survival equipment. [Pg.351]

In June 2003, the SeaPup sensor was tested at a site off the Atlantic coast. As was discussed in Section 6.4.3, the SeaPup sensor showed almost an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity over the SeaDog due to design enhancements incorporated into the system. In addition, the SeaPup responds much more rapidly to TNT than the SeaDog, which is an important advantage for mapping chemical plumes in the marine environment. [Pg.146]
