Across the Atlantic Ocean

The next several entries feature examples from the lichen literature. Study of chemical constituents of lichens has proved an invaluable source of information on relationships within this widespread group of organisms. The first example, Pseudevernia furfuracea (= Parmelia furfuracea) involves a disjunction across the Atlantic Ocean, bnt other examples in this set enjoy mnch wider—and often unusual—disjunctions. This example is inclnded here in order to keep the lichen material in one place. 

Herb has a dream. He wants to be the first person in the world to row across the Atlantic Ocean. He has been practicing for three years on a lake. Now he is ready for his big trip. As he drove his car toward the coast, he began to think about his dream. "I think I am ready to row across the Atlantic," he said to himself. "I have been practicing for three years. I can t think of anything that could go wrong. I can swim, I have enty of food and water, and I have a computer that tells me where I am and how far I am from land." [ finish the story ]... 

In 1999 a band of maximum annual mean positive SAT anomalies stretched from the North American continent eastward across the Atlantic Ocean and the Eurasian continent toward the equatorial western sector of the Pacific Ocean. Minimum SAT anomalies were observed in a broad band of the central and northeastern region of the Pacific Ocean (including a decrease of SAT). Analysis of the observational data revealed the prevalence of positive temperature anomalies in many regions of the globe. The most vivid anomalous situations include both warming and cooling events (Scafetta et al., 2004). Here are some aspects of temperature variations in 1999 ... 

The significance of Haber s discovery was soon apparent. World War I began in 1914 in Europe. Very soon, Germany was no longer able to get nitrates from Chile. Nitrates were essential to the war effort for making explosives. But ships cartying nitrates from Chile to Germany were usually not able to get across the Atlantic Ocean.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh was the author of 14 books, the mother of six children, and the wife of the aviator Charles Lindbergh, who flew across the Atlantic Ocean by himself in 1927 and became an instant international hero (though his reputation was sullied later on when he accepted an award from the Nazi government). Unlike many wives of famous men, she became famous in her own right — which is exactly what you would expect from someone with a tenth house as packed as hers. Figure 16-1 shows her extraordinary birth chart.

Charles Lindbergh flies solo across the Atlantic Ocean. 

Sola 1993 Huertas et al. 2008), suggest that chemical communication could be involved at key stages of their life history, such as the migration across the Atlantic Ocean and complex reproductive processes. Knowledge of eel olfaction could be included in hatchery operation protocols for the aquaculture industry or restoration of European eel. For example, sex pheromones, when identified, could potentially be used to induce reproduction under artificial conditions and produce offspring in a hatchery. Under such conditions the cultured animals could be used in the restocking of eel in European waters or reduce the needs for commercial fishing.
