Any list of copolymer applications would be as extensive as the applications of polymers in general. We shall only consider a few items in which the two-component nature of the copolymer plays an explicit role in determining the properties of the polymer. In addition, we shall examine several additional concerns which come up when applications technology is considered.

Valve Application Technology Functional requirements and the properties of the controlled fluid determine which valve and actuator types are best for a specific apphcation. If demands are modest and no unique valve features are required, the valve-design style selection may be determined solely by cost. If so, general-purpose globe or angle valves provide exceptional value, especially in sizes less than 3-inch NFS and hence are very popular. Beyond type selection, there are many other valve specifications that must be determined properly in order to ultimately yield-improved process control.

The ability of transition metal ions, and especially chromium (as Cr3+), to form very stable metal complexes may be used to produce dyeings on protein fibres with superior fastness properties, especially towards washing and light. The chemistry of transition metal complex formation with azo dyes is discussed in some detail in Chapter 3. There are two application classes of dyes in which this feature is utilised, mordant dyes and premetallised dyes, which differ significantly in application technology but involve similar chemistry. 

The initial objective of this series of books has been to establish a coherent body of explanatory information on the principles and application technology of relevance for students preparing to take the Associateship examinations of the Society. This particular book has been directed specifically to the subject areas covered by Section A of Paper B the organic chemistry and application of dyes and pigments and of the auxiliaries used with them in textile coloration processes. However, many qualified chemists and colourists interested in the properties of colorants and their auxiliaries have found the First Edition useful as a work of reference. For several reasons it has been convenient to divide the material into two separate volumes 1. Colorants, 2. Auxiliaries. Although fluorescent brighteners share some features in common with colorants, they have been treated as auxiliary products in this book.
